MPG's of CLS 550 vs. CLK 500...?

I'm looking at CLS's again ( 550 or 55, not 500 ) and am wondering what kind of mileage people are experiencing. My '04 CLK 500 is getting 21.5 combined city/highway and I'm driving about 100 miles a day. With the small 16 gallon tank, I'm filling the car up about every 3 days at $50 a pop. I'm assuming the CLS will get slightly less MPG's than the CLK due to higher weight of the CLS... It may not change my mind about getting a CLS but I may need to pick up a commuter rat and leave the CLS home for weekends...

Hmm... Apparantly I'm the only person on the planet concerned about gas mileage. Anyway, there's a Black/Black '06 CLS 500 at my local dealer so I test drove it last week... Nice ride compared to my CLK 500 but the extra weight of the CLS was noticeable and the 5 litre engine is barely adequate in this car... Going to test a CLS 550 next and hopefully there will be a big difference in power/torque... Was looking for a CLS 55 but they are hard to find in Colorado... During the test drive, the MPG's averaged 21.1 combined so I guess it's pretty close to the CLK 500...

I don't think mileage is a consideration for most who buy this vehicle. My CLS550 gets about 18 in city/traffic and about 21 on the highway. I think overall I average about 18 but I spend most of my time sitting in traffic to and from work. On clear highway drives, I seem to recall more like 19-22 depending on how hard I push. YMMV (literally)!

Smile I am..

I am concerned about the gas mileage, because at the end of the day it still costs you money. I am really frugal with money, I keep more of it that way! So, I went for the CLS 500 rather than the 55, and it gives my 18/21 as opposed to the 16/18 from the 55.

The power was not enough on the 500? I guess you are used to pushing really powerful cars. For me, the 302 with the K&N filters (gives about 5-10 more) was enough. The car hauls butt and responds on a dime.

I see you did mention you live in high altitude, it really makes that much of a difference there?

I went grocery shopping yesterday and saved $60 in coupons. Bill dropped for 175 to 115. Woot Woot!

Yes, high elevation has a noticeable negative effect on horsepower due to the thinner ( less dense ) air... Engines just don't make the same horsepower at 9500' as they do at sea level. At sea level, the CLS 500's 300 horses might be OK but in the thin air, it's more like 235 and that's not enough for me in a car that weighs 4000+ pounds... And while mods do have some positive effect, they aren't apples-to-apples equal to what you'd get at sea level either so free flowing airfilters, exhaust mods, etc. aren't as cost effective either... Kinda' sucks really when you think about it...
It also effects our gas mileage too for the worse because the engines just aren't as efficient...

CLS 550 back and forth to San Francisco 350 miles, I get 24.8 mpg cruising at 75-80mph. Can't seem to break 25mpg.
Combo freeway to town and futzing around town 18mpg. Hey live it up, we'll all be driving Honda Civics when the government gets fully involved.

Thanks for the responses. I could live with 24 - 26 Highway. I don't do too much city driving anyway thankfully...

My understanding is that the old "optimistic" EPA ratings were replaced with more realistic ratings (that now include higher speeds, faster acceleration and use of air conditioning). Seems possible they may be exceeded under some circumstances.

Smile Good post.

Thats a good site, that tells why your MPG will vary. Minw does vary, about 17-25MPG depending upon distance, trips, and so many other things. On longer trips, and less light it goes up. On more lights it goes down. Look at your gauge, your CLS will tell you what it is getting currently.

In my case, the MPG's of my '04 CLK range from 16.6 to 32... But, I drive to/from home in the Mountains to Colorado Springs. The route is mostly highway but includes either driving up the mountain pass or down... Obviously driving down I have gravity working for me and up is vice-versa.
If I take a long highway trip to Denver via I-25, I average 21.5 MPG's doing 75 - 90 ... My total running average sits right at 21.5 to 21.6 hand calculated.
I was just figuring that the CLS would be slightly less as it is a heavier car than the CLK...
