Running in

Hi all

Collected my new ride on Tuesday and very happy with it. Typical though, the first day I have it and we get snow on what has been the mildest and wettest winter in decades!

I've not had the chance to put my foot down in it yet, as I can't take it over 4,500 rpm and 85mph or kick down during the running period for the first 1k miles (1,500km). After this, the instruction is to build up things gradually. What does this actually mean?? It's pretty vague. Should I keep it under 5.5k rpm for another 500 miles and then 6.5k rpm for another 250?

Any thoughts appreciated and I'll post a few pics when the weather is next half decent.

Thanks

That's just lawyer talk. Apply common sense and drive the car the way you want from the minute you own it.

After my break-in mileage I just planted my right foot on the floor. It's a hand built AMG engine and is built to run.

"hard break in" here from mile 1 or whatever was on it at delivery- for all my AMG's: wait for the engine oil to reach normal temps then run the rpms up and down the ranges but don't let them sit in any high range for a long time. Seat those piston seals by pressing them... the engine has been run for 500 hours pre delivery so as emericr said it; drive it normal from day one the way you would.

Hard break in done on my previous AMG's:

2001 E55
2004 E55
2005 CL65
2010 E63
2012 CLS63
2012 E63
2012 C63 BS

Yea, I'm the same way. As long as the oil is close to 150, I hammer on the car from day one.

What Vic said, let the oil get to temp and then give it some gas, not so much hammer it but let it go to redline for a moment and slowly backoff...

You'll seat the rings etc.....

The more mileage ya get the quicker you can let it build revs and by 2500 miles or so... just nail it

But again, if you plan to keep it for any length of time, ALWAYS LET THE OIL get to temp before you hammer it

I've seen so many people on Harleys where I live that pull out of a bar and go write to redline then wonder why their new $40k CVO blew up....

I can't fault anyone for it, materials and engineering tolerances are probably up to the task these days, but I would caution against taking advice from folks who don't intend to drive the car beyond it's warranty period on this point.
Not the best analogy, but I'm reminded of Buffet's caution "never ask a Barber if you need a haircut".

Proper bedding procedures for high quality brake pads, for example, makes a huuuuge difference, for track use. No issue at all with your ceramic brakes, of course, a chief benefit of the expense. Just sayin that aside from a short list of esoteric meta-materials, we remain very much in the mechanical era in 2016. Does an uncertain degradation make a 'material' difference for your use case? Probably not, but YMMV.
