Anyone go from an R8 to an AMG GT?

I am interested in both the AMG GT and R8. I presently drive a 2017 911S. I am looking at a 2015 R8 V10. Has anyone gone from an R8 to an AMG GT or vice versa? Your input would be appreciated.

I somehow sold my GTS and got the 2017 R8 ...not sure why ...impulse ...with my 9 year old son saying “it is Iron man’s car”

Kept the R8 for 8 months and then got an interim 2017 C63 S coupe....waiting for my ordered GTR...

The R8 is a well made car...but it still felt like an A4 Audi on steroid to me ...no real soul....steering felt very light. Sound was OK.
I also drove the V10 plus version...thinking ..that was the difference ...i could barely feel the difference...may be the gears shift points were different.

The AMG GT is a lot sexier to me ... tons of personality..even if twin turbo ...the engine is better ...the sound is better than the NA engine of the R8.

On on a few hard accelerations , the R8 downshifted when I was trying to upshift...happened 3 times ....first time ...I thought it was my mistake...Nope....it did again and was quite scary both times.

It terms of practicality...the GT is much better than R8 ...much more trunk space.

And if you can get a GTR....NO comparison ....R8 V10 or V10 plus does not match the Viceral GTR...love it...much better track car ...everything about the GTR is better than R8 .... even a future more track version of R8 is no longer a temptation ...been there ...no going back ....

I also have a GT3 coming in December ....that to me is a real fun difference of personality and driving. I really like both the GTR and GT3 personalities on the track ...(drove my GTR and a friend 2018 GT3).... I would never consider keeping two cars if one of them was an R8 ...

sorry to be so negative on R8 ...surprising to me how disappointed I was ...(even thinking it was the” bargain Huracan” ....perhaps the Perfomante is real different ...don’t know ...not worth the extra 100k +)

AMG 17GT posted a link to a thread I started reference R8- thanks
GTS 007- I disagree with much of what you say reference your experiences- sounds like you had a V-8 which is a substantial difference versus the V10
I do agree that a stock GT sounds better then a stock R8, however, after adding exhaust to my V10 it sounded fantastic
I found the R8 cabin and seats more comfortable, the GTS seats are tight on by back and I am not a big guy but the GTS interior is nicer
performance wise my R8 was faster (pre VF supercharger) but I suspect my GTS is now faster post EC tune
R8 was more exotic looking and feeling
GTS is a better DD as it does have the hatch and my R8 was lowered which created some hassles
overall it obviously is very personal, however, a Gen 1 R8 with a V10 and gated manual is an awesome choice - they have depreciated significantly with nice low mile examples available at $100-110 which represents an awesome car for the $$

only reason Id do the R8 if it had the gated manual shifter...otherwise their R tronic single clutch automated trans was awful... the DCT was better (which I guess a 15 would be?)... the amg GT is a much faster car fyi... Not to magazine race... but

https://www.caranddriver.com/feature...data#backfires

the AMG GTS 2016 is there at #33 (the GTR is #7 although should be #6)... at a 2:51 , your talking about car at #58 at a 2:57.5 ... again, not magazine racing, but 6.5 seconds is pretty big (Asssuming your looking at a v10 plus)

Thanks for your insight. I think the R8 is more exotic looking and would be more of an event while also being compliant enough to daily drive. Nothing like a NA V10.

The R8 looks good as a spyder and the RWS is attractively priced while providing a RWD experience you might miss with AWD.

The design is long in the tooth and sales of the generation 2 have been soso. Interested to see how the facelift looks in person.

No, as stated in my post ...was 2017 R8 ...Latest one ..v10 ...was my a plus. I made a deal to buy a new black one in the showroom and order a grey v10 + ....which I ended up cancelling.

The R8 does feel roomier inside ...but that is exactly what I like about the AMG GT...a cockpit feel ... I am 6 feet tall exactly and 190...I prefer the snug feeling of getting into an AMG GT. .... R8 interior was not special enough.

While I have never tracked my R8 (but I drive quite hard and fast.....) ...

I am not looking for top speed ... but acceleration and overall chassis feel, handling ..breaking ...

My current GTR is such a great track car and feels so much better than the R8 even on regular roads... By the way ... that is a fair comparison in terms of $$$ ...because my GTR was a few thousand cheaper than the R8. I think it was 184k and got 4K off... I don’t recall the exact number on the R8 but it was higher.

R8 “more exotic” looking with the see through engine ...I agree ...that was exactly also what got me to buy it ....but after a very short while ...while the stance is similar ...it is FAR from the looks of the exotic Huracan.

I prefer the new front end f the 2019 R8 ..more agressive ... it needed it badly. dont like the new rear ... too much of that honeycomb plastic ....

the long hood and design of GT is more classic (type e ? , original 300 sl .) ....probably will look better with age than the current R8

Agree with you. I loved how my Huracan looked but coming from RWD 911s and F-cars wasn't a fan of the AWD nor the poor rear visibility. The Huracan felt like a bigger car than my 458 and was more difficult to daily.

I always wondered if the R8 would have been a better fit. Enjoy your comments and very pleased with my GTS after over 1 year of ownership and 300 or so days of driving.

all depends on what you want (and what forum your on)
Huracan was a consideration but too much "look at me" attention
458 was too mileage sensitive for me
650S tempting but had reliability concerns with no in state dealer
my R8 got way more attention then my GTS does but that's fine as it helps make the GTS a better daily
I agree the R8 design has gotten dated and with 10 year old, V8's on the market in the $60's they have become less special
I did extensive mods to my R8 which are not necessary on my GTS as it already has better factory exhaust/steering wheel/rear spoiler/blacked out trim/pss tires/red seat belts...which are all things I changed on my R8
having factory FI also helps as I was able to do a EC tune for 1/15 the cost of my R8's VF supercharger
all in all its an individual choice but I really enjoyed my R8 and would highly recommend it for the proper application

I sold my 16 GTS and bought an R8 V10 plus. The R8 is the exclusive edition in Quantum Gray with the orange stripe on the side blade , it’s really unique so it edges the GTS in the looks department for me. All of my friends all love the R8....... but if you gave me the choice to drive either one on a nice summer night...... it would be the GTS every time. The GTS just felt so engaging and ruthless and the exhaust sound is amazing.....the R8 is so smooth it’s almost boring. R8 was over $230k MSRP vs the GTS $145k. When my R8 got delivered I was really excited to drive it and thought it would blow the GTS out of the water but I quickly relalized that wasn’t going to be the case. Higher RPMs is where the R8 separates itself but otherwise the GTS felt just as quick.

My R8 turns more heads and causes a scene but I think that’s mainly the paint job and that’s not a positive for everybody.

I’d consider trading my R8 for a new GTR if he opportunity presented itself.

having both I disagree with your driving experience but certainly an interesting perspective
as expected if you go on the R8talk forum everyone puts down the GTS as inferior in looks and performance although superior in interior styling and electronics (especially the Gen1)
I consider my GTS more of a GT car while the R8 felt more exotic
both are fine cars and serve their purpose very well

I had an R8 V10 coupe and put 27k mi. on it. I setup up the suspension, tune and it was just boring compared to my GTS but then again I drive my car..

I did. I smithed from the r8 to the AMG. you will notice a couple things the r8 is much more forgiven and calmer than the amg for sure. the amg gts is closer to a viper more raw power and less electronic controls. I do enjoy the amg but the r8 is a better daily driver
