Solved - GT Gas / Burnt Oil Smell

There are few other threads on this issue. I decided to make a new thread with “Solved” in the title to help other members who may run into this issue find the solution quicker.

I had a 2016 GTS and once it got to about 10K miles, it smelled like gas/burnt oil after driving the car and parking it in my garage. I could even smell it stopping behind traffic lights if my window was rolled down. I took it to MB dealer; they kept the car for 2 days and said they couldn’t find anything wrong with it. I was about to trade it for a DB11, so I didn’t worry about it too much.

My 2018 GTS started making the same smell around 500 miles to a point I couldn’t enjoy sitting in my man cave and admiring my rides.

I made an appointment and took it to the dealer. They were trying to get me to leave the car with them, but I insisted that an AMG tech come out and check my car while the engine was still warm and running. Their foreman came out, I opened the hood and asked him to sniff around the dry sump holding tank, after a few minutes, they agreed that there is an unusual smell.

They took the car in and about 20 minutes later, I was told they found 5 more cases in their Product Technical Support System. (PTSS) database with same issue. Apparently some of the hoses around the dry sump holding tank could leak and cause the odor.

They ordered the parts and I took it back yesterday to have them replaced. I got the car back today and the fume issue is almost 90% gone. There was a slight smell that lasted 5-10 minutes after parking the car in the garage, but it dissipated quickly. Prior to the repair the smell lingered for 8-12 hours sometimes longer.

I have attached a portion of the service ticket in case you want to show your SA what was done to fix the issue.

Was this Park Place? If so, I'll probably take mine in to get remedied as well.

Update

The smell came back after 4 weeks and is as strong as it was originally. I took it back to the same MB dealership. When I dropped it off the service manager admitted that there is an unusual smell. After a few days, their foreman called me and said there is nothing further they can do about it, he said "This is a race car, the smell is a known issue and inherent to this model".

It's frustrating, I can no longer park it in my man cave and have to put it in the secondary garage. When I come to a traffic light and if the window is down, the smell gets to the cabin. I am thinking about contacting a lemon law attorney.

Is it a charcoal canister issue? These are difficult to diagnose. Brainstorming...

Have you checked the oil level to make sure it isn’t overfilled?

What a stupid ****ty answer, this is not a race car, at best it is a high performance street car that benefits from some race derived tech.
If this smell is a known defect I think lemon should cover it or maybe emissions warranty? but my car GT roadster has no smells form the engine and I dont think all GT's are smelling?
Is your engine having some type of excess internal pressure or blow by as it seems your car was "fixed" for a few weeks until the new components failed again.

I would demand an answer from another dealership or from the regional AMG Rep. my GT R makes no smells such as yours, and I’ve just sent three days jumping in/out of multiple GTSs and GTRs at the Academy Pro+ course at COTA and not one of them had this ‘burning oil’ smell noticeable. And all of them were generally hot as hell and left sitting running all the time except for lunch time.

Also, add oil to bring the level to the middle level
on the dipstick.

Something weird is going on. If you like the car try another dealership and make sure they have an AMG tech.

Good luck.

DAMMIT! lol.

Would be great if a few of us here on the forum were to attend an Academy course(s) together. I am amazed how many guys there were on their 3rd-4th Pro+ course!

Interesting. Mine does smell like oil too after spirited action. I will investigate.

I write things like this off to it’s a sports car and sports cars have smells, squeaks, and rattles sometimes. I never get too worked up about such things.

I actually know of a local GTS that has explained same issue to local dealer, they put a great person on it and even involved MB, nothing there that is fixable.

Woudn’t sweat it......

Mine has it off and on as well, though it is thankfully not strong enough that anyone has ever noticed it but me, so I'm probably just going to live with it for now.

I'm just up the road in Dallas, but need to get my butt into gear and start doing these events when they are local like this.

I believe that AMG did a great job replicating the same oil smell that my early 911's had as they sat in the garage secretly rusting. I couldn't imagine complaining to a Porsche dealer back then and uttering anything but praise for fear I wouldn't be allowed to order the new model at over window. The alterative was a Corvette which we were led to believe was primarily driven by non-college graduates who would soon to be drafted and strip club owners.
Has anyone on the board actually built a car? Was it perfect? If you want perfection get a Lexus and then drive it before you slit your wrists from boredom.
Since it's Cinco de Mayo to celebrate I'll have another Bombay Sapphire Martini (dry) and retire to the man cave to watch the Spa race and smell the aroma of the 911s errr AMG=GTS.

In all seriousness I believe these types of ‘hot oil’ smells are generally only prevalent in vehicles with a dry sump oil system. I will say that in my Z06 it was so awful that when coming to a stop after exiting an Interstate, it was nauseating. I had to place the HVAC system in ‘Recirc’ Mode when at a standstill.

Interesting! I have owned many high performance cars over the years and never had any issue with fume except with my 2016 GTS and now the 2018 GTS. I currently have an Huracan and a California T in my garage, neither one of them smell. So please don't tell me to get a Lexus!

Car manufacturing has come a long way, a brand new car costing 6 figure shouldn't smell like an old diesel truck. Enjoy your martini while smelling the aroma.

I thought the purpose of this forum was for MB owner to share and learn from each other. I don't need or care for your sarcastic comments, keep them to yourself.

I think Jim was just trying to be sarcastic and supportive, no harm intended. The message being these are cars, cars have oil and gas, these are high performance cars and to not let it bother youself its minor and enjoy the car. But obviously have high expectations when paying for such a premium and get it checked if it's a more serious problem. Hope it gets totally resolved...

It was satire to exaggerate the aspects of egotism or self indulgence. Sorry you missed it not all the posts can be clinical.

Just a thought, but that screenshot says the cause is a porous hose. That doesn't mean there's a leak. It means the hose material lets gas (the odor) escape because the material itself has microscopic holes. So liquid isn't getting out, but vapor is. So... replacing the hose with an OEM one isn't going to solve the problem. But if you replace that hose with something else, from another manufacturer, maybe that will do the trick.
