After the covid-19 lockdown I took out my 2016 GT-S and noticed a small oil leak under the car. Any ideas what it could be, and if it is serious? I'm entering my last month of warranty, so I probably better go to the dealer quickly... 😃 The picture shows where the oil is dripping from and it is taken from the right-hand side, from between the right front wheel and the right door.
Residue doesn’t usually move forward of the point of the leak. With there being quite a bit of residue forward of the rear main seal, I wouldn’t be convinced that is it.
Just curious - how long did it sit without being driven?
I took it out for a very short drive (less than 5 km) every 2 to 3 weeks during the lock down of last 3 months. Otherwise it was driven for 300 km every two weeks. In total it has low mileage: 21000 km.
But this seems not too bad either, no?
Late to the party on this thread, but from the pic, it’s rear main seal, fairly common. Dealers don’t get concerned until drops are actually dripping on ground, not too concerned when just oil residue on housing.
This. Times a billion. No matter the issue, minor or major, if I have a warranty on a car I bring up everything to the dealer and ask that they fix whatever is going on. It's more work and $$ for them.
My 2017 AMG GT S has started leaking a little bit of oil in the same spot. Fortunately it’s still under warranty. I noticed a tiny puddle under my car on the garage floor. Not a big leak, maybe 3-4 mL of oil have leaked out, but it’s enough to make a small puddle on my floor.
My rear main seal leaked as well when in storage for 4-5 months. Very little but yet it leaked. I had it replaced. Seems to be a common issue on the M178.
Oops, I am the OP but I had forgotten about this thread, and only saw some replies with the last reply now...
So I had it checked at the dealer and they said it was the crankshaft seal (Is this the same as main seal? I am translating from Dutch).
Now I see some drops when not driving it for some weeks. Indeed better when I drive it more!
Was it expensive to get the main seal replaced? I guess the part is cheap, but is it a lot of work?

In my case, it only leaked when the car sat for 3+ weeks. No leaks when I drove it regularly. Dealer didn’t want to replace it under warranty, showing me a bulletin saying its normal when the car sits. I traded the car in late 2020, so I’m not sure what happened later (if the leak got worse).

Leaks are never normal. Crank seal (same a s main seal) is a 10-20 dollar part. Just a rubber ring really. However, there is some light work involved that involves dropping the transmission and rear suspension and shaft tunnel out of the car. Take the flywheel off. Realign wheels when everything is put back together. So, you are paying for the labor hours. The initial quote I got was $5900 I was a lucky guy and made a better deal due to the wonderful support from Mercedes Benz of Burlington, MA.
Veel geluk! Lekkage problem verslechteren met de jaren. En olie lekkage veroorzaakt een hoop bende. (Inderdaad, ik ben ook een Nederlander woonachtig in de VS!) Groet, Remco
Here is my leak after 5 months of winder storage (click on it for higher resolution):

Check and make sure the leaks are from the main rear shaft seal. It may be that the screws that run from under need the crankcase and hold the plastic splash baffle located inside the crankcase are loose and need to be resealed. Be careful not to over tighten these screws as they are threaded into baffle which is a plastic material.

Yeah, that was not the issue in my case. But something to keep an eye on for sure. Thanks!
