2016 GTS Rearview Camera replacement cost - yikes!

Any guess as to how much it costs to fix/replace a 2016 GTS rearview backup camera???

The answer is $3500. ($1500 for the camera + $2000 in labor). I wasn't too shocked by the camera cost, but the labor cost blew me away. Given my camera works most of the time, I'm just gonna live with it for a while. I can't imagine how this job requires so much labor. Perhaps some software reprogramming is also required in the COMAND module to accept the new camera.

Time to start searching some junkyard sights for a GTS backup camera. That should be a fun scavenger hunt.

They won’t warranty the camera? Have you asked them for a discount. That’s crazy.

There is no way a skilled shop cant fix that for FAR less. If it's just the camera it shouldn't cost more than the replacement and an hour or 2 to splice in elegantly and test. Are they intending to drop the drive tunnel to re-route wiring that is already there??

Just splice in an aftermarket camera or go to a Mercedes junk yard and get one of of a wrecked Benz, I think most newer Benz models use the same backup camera,

Thanks for the advise and feedback!!! Much appreciated.

Dealer came back on Friday and gave me a new quote of $1400 for parts and labor. That's still too high in my opinion. In searching the Mercedes parts inventory, you can get a brand new camera for $700. Used ones for around $400. Repair seems pretty straight forward on pulling off the back bumper (about 2 hour job). I've done this before on a Porsche and it was actually more complex as the light housings had to also be removed.

Only 'unknown' to me is whether or not the COMAND firmware may not recognize the rearview camera device. Not too sure how much 'plug and play' is in the COMAND software.

Wow crazy change in quotes 🙄. Would you mind sharing the dealer name with me either here or on PM? I’m in Florida too and keeping a mental list of the dealers to avoid bringing my GTS to 👍

Also I can share two MB independent mechanics in So FL although haven’t used them myself, only by reputation. I bet they can save you a lot (if you live in the vicinity).

$1,400 sounds about right actually. When you consider a corporate MB rate for shop time; the added steps that they will take procedurally - you might want to get the part sourced via online - its competitive and you will likely save a few bucks and then find an indy shop to do the work. Same end result and you would have a couple hundred bucks - the right indy shop will have access to the star system but you likely wont need it. Just make sure that they have diagnosed it correctly as the camera and it isnt something else in the command system or wiring.

Even though the Mercedes tech says its the camera that is defective, I'm personally not 100% convinced as the Systems Settings in the COMAND module does not show a setting for the Rearview Camera (on/off) which is documented in the COMAND owners manual.

Does any one else see a setting for turning on/off the Rearview Camera in the Vehicle Systems Settings on the COMAND screen??

Just to be sure, if it's missing it may be because it isn't detecting a working camera. It depends on how the Command SW is coded to treat the R camera function.
