US v EU AMG GT

Hi, I’m moving from the USA to Europe later this year and wondering if I were to take my stock US 2018 AMG GT coupe with me, would it require any mods to get an EU certificate of conformity? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

If moving for good I'd sell and buy there. It's more economical. Short term doesn't worth conversion.

Definitely easier to sell here and buy there. I was reading about a guy wit the Porsche 911. It took him a lot of money and a little over 9 months to bring the car to the EU spec. Just not worth it if the car is not that special…

Depends on how long you are planning on staying there. You can drive a US plate for up to 6 months in Europe, w/o needing to mod and register it. If you stay longer then you have to register it. There are at a minimum mods required for the lights. The indicators in Europe must be amber, so you'll have to replace the tail lights. The headlights also need to be adjusted as the beam patterns in the USA are different. European spec cars also have the ability to adjust the headlights for LHD and RHD driving in case you plan to travel between the UK and the mainland.

Other than that it depends if you want the Infotainment system to work fully. You'd have to get the European maps installed, which is possible, but the Mercedes me services won't work. I did European Delivery with my C63 and essentially that gives the experience of driving a US spec car for a temporary period in Europe. MB installed the European maps, but I had no traffic etc., so I was primarily using Google Maps via CarPlay. Having the proper maps, though, made all the driving assistance features work correctly and the speed limit recognition was working properly as well.

I'm toying with the idea to do another European trip with the car and ship it over there for a couple of months and then back. There are car transporter companies that handle this.

Thanks for all the responses. It is likely it will be more of a long term stay, 1-3 years. Economically it works out cheaper to take it, than to sell mine and buy one there ( i managed to get a great deal on mine and the equivalent, with currency conversion, seems to be about 20%+ more than I paid plus it doesn't look like I'll liable for duties/taxes etc). My main concern is having to do any major modifications relating to exhaust, emissions etc. If it's just simple things like lights etc then I'll still come out ahead.

Chances are that it's easily worth 20% more now also when you sell it here. There is no currency conversion when you live in Europe as you likely be paid in Euro anyways and there are typically great deals on used high-end cars there... Don't think it's worth the hassle we had when we brought our Mercedes over here from Switzerland.

I bought it for about USD$87K plus taxes in July 2020. The cheapest comparable GT in Europe that I've seen is around EU105k so about USD$127k. I may not be looking in the right places though.... I just figured for $3.5k for shipping from LA to Europe and then budget $2k for any minor mods plus some handling charges and it makes sense. Also then when I leave after 2-3 years I'd most likely sell it and potentially get more for it than I would selling in the US. Anyway that's my logic! Not sure if it's flawed or not? My only concern is if any large/costly modifications need to be done to get the EU conformity.

I have done that with a 2020 S560.
Here is a list of what's required,
Replaced Tailight for amber turn signal +programming
Added rear fog light (in between the exhaust on the lower bumper) I think the AMG GT is in the same location.
EU Light switch (with rear fog light button)
EU maps
EU plate bracket
Warning triangle
Safety Vest

The AMG GT may have the rear fog installed in US cars but I don't think it is activated. Check your light switch to see if the button for fog light is there.

Turn Signal must be amber so if your current signal flash red (likely), it needs to be replaced with EU lights.
