Hydroplaning Isn’t Much Fun!

This car is brutal in the rain. WTF! I bought my GTS used and the tires were worn in front. I blamed the hydroplaning on the tires. Installed a new set of P Zero’s. Much better than the bald tires but it’s still almost undriveable on the highway in heavy downpours over 60mph. The front end comes unglued pretty violently and quickly wants to swap ends with the rear. Certainly more than any other car I’ve ever owned. Last car was a Camaro ZL1 with 285 on the front and it wasn’t as bad in the rain as this car. Driving 70 on the highway in moderate rain is a deathwish! Almost made me soil my pants! Never lost control but could have easily. Did a search here and surprised no one mentioned it before.

Have never had this issue with either the stock tires, and especially not after upgrading to Michelin PS4S. I've driven in torrential downpours on a number of occasions, on the highway, as well as many times during moderate rain.

Never cared for the P Zeros.

PS4S are far better all round tyre IMHO

I have p-zeros in the rear and can attest to that! Comfort mode certainly doesn’t help when the “coasts” to save fuel (let’s the car just roll until you brake or accelerate). You’ll eat it if you hit a water puddle while “coasting”. I drive in sport mode in wet weather so it doesn’t “coast”. I drive like I’m gingerly ice skating when it’s pouring wet.

Going to switch to 4s on next set of rears and hope it feels less slippery.

I've had the opposite experience. I expected the car to be squirrely, but it is surprisingly planted. I may or may not have driven upwards of 160mph in pouring rain (with the top down) in my old roadster with pilot super sports...
I will be going with the PS4s next though, Ive never heard anything good about Pzeros from people who have tried any of Michelins offerings.

Going quick top down even with heavy rain keeps the inside nice and dry
The GTC with stock Michelin PSS is nicely planted with zero issues. Would have liked PS4's but they were backordered until mid July and our rears had inside tire wear showing the belt at 10k miles so we went with PSS again. Still a decent tire...

Rain? I never drive it in the rain. I check the weather every morning when I take it out. If rain is possible during the times of my travels, I switch out to my Ford suv.

I have the same new PZero tires on the front of my other car... a Jag F-Type. The Jag is no problem in the rain. Soooo it’s not the tires. The GT is an amazing car. My favorite car yet and I’ve had a few but a nightmare in the rain. One weird thing.... I was driving on the NJ Turnpike in the same rain intensity and had much less of a problem. Once I crossed over into NY it was a whole different story. I wonder if the roads are paved differently? Unfortunately I live in NY!

It's your tires. The P Zero is terrible in the rain. The wider the worse they get. Your F-type probably has skinnier front tires I'm guessing. We can have some pretty heavy downpours here during a wet winter and the only tire I ever hydroplaned with was the P Zero on my previous car. I had 275s in the front. Terrible tire in the wet. Switched to the PSS and then PS4S and never was a problem again. I never hydroplaned with a Michelin tire ever.

The Jag has 255 on the front. 10mm smaller. Not that much smaller to have much if any effect. The hydroplaning is so severe it’s not likely a tire change will make much of a difference. Im hydroplaning at 55mph on the highway in a 65 zone and I'm being passed by everyone. It’s so bad! 😠

Well, not sure how else to put it, but hydroplaning boils down to the tires not able to channel enough water away from the center of the tire. Speed and tread depth are the main factors. From a tire design perspective it comes down to tread design. Weight can also play a difference. The GT S has more weight on the rear axle, so the front axle is lighter to begin with given its front mid engine rear transaxle design. The Jag has a 50:50 weight distribution, so the more weight on the front wheels and slightly skinnier tires can make all the difference. I'm telling you get rid of the P Zero, and put on a set of the PS4S. You can thank me later.

I drove my GTS for five years in all conditions...rain and ice. Put PS4s on it and drive like a reasonable person if it's pouring rain and you wont have any problem.

I used to have a Z06 with Goodyear F1's and it was a thrill ride in the rain. My GTS with PS4 has no issue in the rain unless I floor it, and even then it's pretty well behaved.

Continuing the validation train; I've never had any problems in even heavy rain with PS4S. My fronts are wider than stock as well
