Used AMG GTS Buying Advice

Hi Everyone!

I am new to this forum as I have spent many many years on the bimmerpost forums. I am almost complete on the sale of my second F8X, 18' BMW M4 after driving it for a short time. I have been interested in purchasing a 16-18' AMG GTS Coupe for quite a bit sometime and I was hoping to get some input. I understand it could be hypothetical and no crystal ***** in this weird used car market.
I do not drive often anymore, as my work went fully remote. What is a typical price range should I be gunning for with around 20k miles or less? I remember them being in the 70s and 80s if I am not mistaken before covid? Now they are hanging out in the 90k range with about 20k miles for a 16'. Do I pickup a used daily under 10k used (like a 08 mb e350 sport? wish me luck) for the time being to see how the market plays out on the GTS as I am not in a rush and do not really drive more than 6k miles per year? Any thoughts or opinions are greatly appreciated, just brainstorming here. Any other input about the purchase as well.

Thank You!

Zak

I would look to find a 20k miles GTS in the $80k range. I found a few in that range and then found and bought a 2017 GTS but with 41k miles for $74k. I not only went for the lower price, but just as much because this car had the exact features I wanted it. I bought my car without seeing it in person and got lucky that it's probably in better shape than the lower mileage cars I might have picked.

I still have a few other cars that I'll drive so I figure I'll put 3k miles per year on the GTS. I plan to keep it forever so not too worried about the miles as much as the maintenance.

It sounds to me that you should just enjoy the process of seeing if you can find a deal on what you want. Figure out what color you want, what options, etc. There are plenty of good threads here on that subject. I actually thought I wanted a GT until someone posted how much race mode helps on the track (not that I'll ever track my car). I did not want dynamic motor mounts until a few convinced me otherwise. I saw too many bad things on First Editions, otherwise I probably would have ended up with one.

Thank you for the feedback and advice! I'm leaning more towards that. That seems like a reasonable price range. I definitely will take your advice and keep the search active. I have read the same things you were mentioning with options as I've been lurking around here for the past month, I will keep at it.

As I own a S65 V12 AMG and a SL55 AMG (P30-option) it doesn't matter which one I drive, they all put a smile on my face. I was not looking to get an AMG GTS however the car found me (it needed a new engine), now that "I-FIXIT" my smile has grown substantially.

For me it's not a question whether I drive a lot but when I drive I am in vehicle that makes the drive enjoyable. The looks and driving characteristics of the GTS certainly have extended that feeling .

Are you agnostic to the front grille change in 2018? If you like the old and new styles equally then 2016-2018 makes sense. If not, then it's either 2016-2017 or 2018.

One of the cars I came from into the GT was an M4. No comparison.

The only difference between a GT and a GTS are the following: AMG adaptive suspension standard GTS, option GT.
sport exhaust with flaps standard GTS option GT.
front brake calipers 1” larger on front GTS & Red calipers. GT grey calipers. both have option for ceramic.
rear differential is electronic on GTS. GT mechanical.
ECU tuned up 50 hp on GTS. All GT variants tune out about the same except the black series.
I have driven both cars extensively, and can tell you that sport plus on the GT is exactly the same as the race switch on GTS.
Burmaster stereo has options on both.

Mercedes has done a great job differentiating the models, but they really are very much the same, especially if you start checking option boxes and tune the car.

Good luck on your search.

I'm impartial. I think I'd be looking more on the condition, miles, spec than the 18 grill change but I'm open to all 3 years. Ahhh great to hear, I definitely enjoyed the m4 but I know this is a whole new level of beast and class.

Thanks for breaking it down. I'm going to widen the search as a comparison with a GT that are fully optioned as I do want those features mentioned.

Complementary:

The GT has 19 " rearwheels as basic equipment.
The embossed Affalterbach emblem is missing on the shelf.

The last GT (MY21) also had the electric differential, the large front brakes, 20 "rear wheels and even more HP than the original GTS.
You could even order the rear wheel steering.
It was more a GTS at a much cheaper price.

Engine:
GT / GTS engine is the same. The difference is only the ECU software.

GTC and GTR have different cylinder heads, pistons (less compression)and larger turbos.
GTBS has split-scroll turbos and flatplane crankshafts a.s.o.

Kind Regards

Stenzel

Stenzel always has the best info. I thought the engines were the same all the way up and all we were doing when getting a flash tune was converting to the GTR tune. Makes me question a flash more now. I did not think anything on the non S version changed the car performance as much as race version does on the S.

I did not see a 2018 GTS more in that sub $90k range. But I do prefer the 2018 grill myself.

I think (if I can remember), driving in comfort mode a total of two times in a year and a half of ownership. I'm in sport mode always, (but suspension off), and most of the time I am driving in manual shift.

I do not like the factory shift patterns in any mode unless on the track. Even in sport, if I am leaving a light at normal city street speeds I am already in 5th gear in 200 yards. Hendrik has a post out about carbon buildup behind valves on low mileage engines. This is another way carbon builds up quickly on direct injection engines is to "lug it" in low RPM with high engine loads. Cylinder pressures are so low and commensurate, cylinder temps stay low. I prefer to wind out shifts a little higher in each gear, and I am never in 7th gear only doing 45 mph.
