The New SL

With the new AMG GT roadster dubbed SL should we expect to see an abundance of them ala the old SL?

Now on the website They are very expensive. The SL 63 model will approach GTR prices.

Yea a loaded one will be a little over $200k out the door. Nice car for a “daily” maybe.

I agree with Wolfman I’ll be waiting for the 2023 model.

Best regards

Jerry.

unpopular opinion but this new SL looks a little more on the feminine side. doesnt even come close to the aggressiveness of a GTR

At this price, these will come down significantly in the first two years.

That said I’d rather have a GTC convertible for less.

Was talking to my tech yesterday who works at AMG Performance Center and he said that these cars come with defective roof (something to do with magnets that help operate it) that won't close or open. Mercedes is yet to provide with schematics/wiring diagrams. They have 2 cars with the same issue up on the lift with no eta when customers will be getting them back.

I second this, I get the feminine vibe from the new SL. Also all the billboard ad's in my area are women next to the car.

What constitutes a feminine car?

I’ll miss the hardtop convertible.

I don't see the new SL fit in these discerptions.

I can't follow the whole femininity conversation here but like to point out that the new GT will follow in the footsteps of the new SL.

Maybe the front/rear fascia will look different but the overall proportions of the car will be the same as the SL, as can be told from the camo pics/videos already posted. Shorter hood, front engine, attached 9-speed MCT transmission, all wheel drive (assumed as the only SL43 comes in RWD) and likely a hefty weight increase, hopefully less then the 600-700lbs of the SL to the GT/GTC roadster.

Women are actually one of the largest demographics the new SL is targeting. Convertibles are inherently more socially accepted if driven by women. Just google "Should men drive convertibles", and you'll find opinions on why men shouldn't drive convertibles. When I grew up a common stereotype was that two men in a convertible were clearly gay. Not that there's anything wrong with it, but there are a number of stereotypes around men with convertibles. It's often viewed as a late onset midlife crisis type of car. The old SL in particular had become a car for retired men making up for time lost raising their kids. The GT roadster is actually one of a handful of convertibles that are generally viewed as very masculine and can be pulled off by men.

I think they should just concede the GT line and call the current namesake what it really looks like - a hardtop SL.

It's not the GT platform at all except a few design queues. In fact, with this logic, they would have been more accurate calling the GT an SLS.

Nope.

Sadly this will not bode well for the AMG GT platform. Another very capable overweight porker trying to overcome physics with tech...

Funny. In our upbringing a guys midlife crisis would mean either getting a Corvette or Harley or if better off, a Ferrari

For me, the new SL is too much like the old SL lineup. I owned an SL AMG - and on paper it was an amazing car but with my butt in the seat it felt like driving a couch. I just did not enjoy the driving experience and parted with it fairly soon after acquiring it. The opposite is my experience with the GTC coupe. I feel like I am one with the machine and enjoy every second driving - which is good because it's my daily driver. Looks, like art, is very subjective and I find the new SL bland at best and when I move on from my GTC will be moving to another brand.

I think the AMG SL is a disaster cosmetically. Sure, it works as an SL replacement but the retractable hardtop will be sorely missed by the peeps that loved the old version of the SL , although the price increase is laughable.

But how in the hell are MB going to make a new, true GT line out of that thing? It will need drastically different bodywork for a start. I’m not optimistic tbh.

even with different bodywork, the term "lipstick on a pig" comes to mind.

They moved away from mid engine altogether and looks close to a CLS or a C than it does to the GT. The only familiar design queues become the grill and the rear hips. Calling this next gen a GT is a HUGE overreach.

This.
Engine over the front axle, the usual MCT 9 speed which is worlds better to the old 7 speed one but inferior to the Getrag DCT or even the 8 speed ZF slush box we have in the BMW M8c (BMW just dialed in the software perfectly to match their engine). The old GT models had a nice balance with its front-mid engine/transaxle layout. Then there is the extra 600lbs+ to content with, assuming the coupe to be lighter than the SL, placing all the burden on the suspension tech. The ePerformance version will of course weigh even more...

That dead space behind the front seat which is a back seat for two dimensional children is just pathetic.

I guess an optimist would assume that the release of the SL, such as it is, will help used GT's to keep their value better. $200K for a new SL vs $150K for a low mileage, under warranty GTC or R?
