GT3 vs. GTR

Finally got a chance to get both the GT3 and the GTR on track this past weekend at Barber Motorsports Park, along with a friend's Viper TA - all amazingly entertaining cars on the track. All three of us drove all three cars during the weekend.
2014 Viper TA (1.0) on Hoosier A7s (R's were not available), harnesses, Hawk pads, otherwise stock. 18K miles, almost all of them on the track.
2014 GT3, side muffler bypass, G6 engine, DSC controller, Nankang CRS V2, AP racing brakes, Ferodo DS3.12 pads, J hook rotors, buckets and harnesses.
2018 AMG GTR, bypass pipes, Wiestec tune and other Weistec bits, 2K miles on PSC 2s. Factory ceramic brakes, ansix brake cooling ducts.

My son in the GT3 behind me in the GTR, second session on a new track so still exploring (especially that last turn :-):

The verdict:
- Easiest car to go fastest: GT3
- Car that makes you work hardest to go fast: Viper
- Most likely to improve: GTR, with more track focused tires

In the hands of my son (best driver out of the 3 of us), the GT3 was about a second faster than the Viper, which was about a second faster than the GTR. I need better tires....

Konrad - And now I see that you have also posted over her on the AMG forum. Yes, I have both of these cars as well.

Tires matter. Really hard to compare with different types.

How did the outside of the front tires looked like after the event? Also, what drive modes did you use? Race with TC partially off?

On the GTR, I ran the tires at 34/36 psi hot, factory spec alignment. Tire wear and temperatures looked fairly even across each tire at the end of sessions. Taking a couple of psi out of them may have been beneficial but we will experiment with that at the next track day. I think 32/34 hot may be optimum for this setup. We did not push this car to the limits that much (other than that last turn on the video)
On the GT3 I run 31 hot all around and that is the best not just from me but consulting with others, with a track specific alignment (max camber, neutral toe). I do have 2.7 degrees of negative camber up front and I could use another .5-.7 to get better wear, but I need to get parts for that. We all drive the GT3 closer to the limits becuase we have more experience with the car.

On the GTR I used race mode, active brake assist off <- you MUST remember this, TC on. In this setting I did not find the nannies intrusive but then again I was driving on average 7 tenths. My son additionally played with TC partially off and was most comfortable 5-6 clicks from totally off, near the mid point of the yellow dial.
On the GT3 sport mode for trans and I have the DSC suspension controller which improves the dynamic range for the suspension.

What is the pre brake mode? I don't think I have noticed it in the menus.

Technically "Active Brake Assist" which needs to be turned off EVERY TIME YOU START THE CAR - Quite annoying.

I don’t see cherry red rotors. Maybe there is more performance that’s being left on the table?

Not sure this comment is helpful or relevant. Short course, 20 minute sessions, street tires, brake cooling ducts, ceramic brakes.

To make sure ABA is 100% disabled I’m fairly certain that you have to not only be in Race mode, but ESC has to be completely turned off, not just in Sport mode.

Then you can go into the DIC and turn off ABA.

According to the GTR manual, ABA can be disabled via the menu accessible through the steering wheel buttons regardless of the race/sport/sport+ mode. And yes, it needs to be disabled every time the car is started.
