Terry cloth towels vs Chamois

Which one is better in your opinion? One of my cars is Black, so I do want to avoid streaking and swirls.

I myself use chamois to soak up the huge water droplets, but then again, my car is silver. I just lay the chamois on it and smooth it around to let it soak up the water.

In another thread there is a discussion about washing a black car.

I just used worn out hanes t-shirt which is 100% cotton. Works pretty good on my E55! :-)

After washing your vehicle, you should use a drying towel like P21S super absorbing drying towel, or a wizards water bandit. The former is available from http://www.carcareonline.com and the latter from http://www.kleanride.com . Wipe the car down with either of these first, then get any leftover spots with a fieldcrest charisma towel. They have the thickest nap and the most loops per square inch out of any cotton towel on the market. They are also 100% cotton. Some towels say they are 100% cotton, but they are not. They usually consist of a polyster backing, this is what causes swirls. Charismas are 100% cotton, including the backing. They can be purchased from the fieldcrest online site. Do a search in google. I don't remember the url off hand.

I forgot to add...

Stay away from old t-shirts, synthetic or real chamois, they will cause swirls. Leave the diapers where they belong, on your baby.

The above drying towels I mentioned are far superior to any conventional methods used. Once you try one, you'll never go back.

Do they have a local store around here in southern cali? Or can you get them at like an Auto store or are they strictly online? Their product sounds really good.

There are other great synthetic chamois than the P21S that are just as good and I got mine at Pep Boys and it works great. It almost dries the car but if you have black you need to follow it up with cloth. I keep the chamois in one hand and a microfiber towel in the other and to a first pass dry with the chamois and follow it up with microfiber towel using the other hand. I used to use diapers made for drying but the microfiber towel is much better. You can get them at Pep Boys also. Don't use t-shirts or underwear because the stiching is usually nylon or poly and that scratches the car. If you are not sure, burn the stitching or fabric. Natural fibers like cotton and wool burn to a soft ash. Synthetics like poly and nylon melt and curl and their ashes are stiff/hard to the touch.

I like the Fieldcrest terry towels for dying, and then use the microfiber towels to get the water out of the crevices and to mop up the drips.

I tried to use the lint free microfiber towels to polish the glass. They sure as hell aren't lint free. The microfiber lint clings to the glass by static charge and the only way to get it off was to wash the car again.

The best thing I've found is relatively new. They are Microfiber towels made by, but not marketed by 3M. After a recommending for over 60 years the use of teri-cloth towels, Meguiars now recommends Microfiber.

I used the microfibers all last season and was very pleased. The Bahama Blue from MB swirls almost as bad (if not worse) than black because it has 3 shades of pearl in the paint. It also seems to be very "soft" for some reason. If I take a teri towel to my hood, even moist, you can watch it make swirls. The Microfibers completely eliminated this problem.

They make make Microfibers in different grades. Blue for glass, clean your glass streak free with just water, Orange for paint and normal drying, and Green for heavier tasks such as wheels and I also use green under my rocker panels.

They are not cheap, but well worth the money. Saved me a lot of time and expense waxing and such this year.

Microfiber info

Try going to:

My Roadster

I believe there is all kinds of info in the car care section. The kit sold there comes with all the pieces I mentioned plus a wash mit.
