You can just pop the hood and hose it down. Make sure not to blast anything too hard, give it a light spray and leave the engine running so you don't waterlog any plugs, etc. The heat of the engine will also start to evaporate some of the water and you can take a rag and wipe up the excess when you're done. There are also some commercially available engine cleaners if your engine bay is particularly dirty. Just remember light spray and leave the car idling.

M113 engine
You don't keep the engine on while washing.
You cover the alternator put a plastic bag over the cold air intake.
Spray it down with gunk foamy engine brite, let sit per directions and hose off.
Then you start the engine after removing coverings.
Watch the decals on the ecu they will blow off if to much water pressure is focused on them. The m112 and m113 are nearly water proof. CCoils are sealed and unlike the m119 you need not fret about water in the spark plug recesses.

No pressure washers, no steam cleaning. With a cold engine, start the car, run for 5 minutes till warm, not hot. I use an engine cleaner from Griot's Garage, hose it off gently, start the car to make water evaporate. Apply engine dressing, make the whole engine bay look like new.

One item to be cautious about, do not apply any engine cleaner to any stickers under the hood, it will dissolve the adhesive and makes them come off.
