Can anyone explain using a clay bar in detail.

You won't believe how much crap you get off your paint when you clay. It's really easy, and the most important tip in that sticky is to cut the bar up-chances are you'll drop it. And use plenty of lube. BTW-clay doesn't do anything for scratches-it just cleans off the stuff sitting on the surface of the paint that washing doesn't remove.
I use the Meguiars 3 Step process. I've heard of a clay bar for cleaning the paint and fine scratches....

follow the sticky threads... the meguiars 3 step process doesn't yield very good results and is meant for the novice detailer.

The finish is as smooth as a baby's bottom and there are no visible micro scratches. The secret to hiding the scratches is to do your best to prevent them in the first place. If you do have some minor scratches, a good wax will hide them.

I've never had to polish my Brilliant Silver E55 in 4 years. It is garaged every night and hand washed about 2-4 times per month with car wash soap and a wash mitt with enough water to sink a battleship. I clay and wax about once every month or two.

how much water do you use on a wash? how does all that water benefit the car?

I start with a large volume of water to rinse off the loose dirt and a high pressure nozzle to blast off anything in the wheel wells and along the bottom of the car. I take my wash bucket and rinse it out before filling with about 3 or so gallons of warm to hot water. The wash process starts at the top of the car and then the hood and trunk. The sides and the front and rear are next. The whole time I'm rinsing the mitt and entire car after each panel. I'm also monitoring the wash water. If it gets dirty, I replace it. The very last thing is the edge of the wheel wells and hte wheels themselves. Howver, I use a different wash mitt for these.
The last thing I do is slow the volume of water and carefully rinse the car to "sheet" as much water off as possible. Dry with microfiber towels and use an air compressor to blast water out of the cracks. If you don't have one, a quick trip around the block will work but be careful not to grind in any of the fresh dirt you just picked up.
Step back and admire!
