The FEEL of my paint

The FEEL of my paint
All,

I have a Brilliant Silver CLK430.

I actually read the manual (believe it or not)...and they mention that you should get familiar with the FEEL of the paint.

I did.

Yesterday, I noticed that eventhough my paint is clean and very shiny after a wash.....it FEELS different. If I wash my hands and run my fingers across the surface I can feel roughness....almost like I can feel tiny impurities in the finish.

Sounds like it's in need of a detail.

Clay or buffing? All of the detail shops I've seen say they would do buffing/polishing. None of them will clay by hand.

What is your view?

Am I just imagining things with my paint job? (it's a 2000 model in awesome condition)

THANKS

oh....I'm posting this here because some of guys don't read the detailing forum...and I want your opinions!

Clay your CLK. Get some Pinnacle Clay Bar and Lube. Check out the detailing forum for pics of my car before/after wash/clay/polish/synthetic wax/caranuba wax. When I was done after claying the car, the car was SMOOTH AS GLASS.

The reason they don't wanna clay it manually is because it takes longer. When you polish, you won't get it as smooth, AND you're taking a small layer of clearcoat off too. Go with the clay.

It's literally a bar of clay. You run it over your car's body and it takes off any tiny debris etc. making your car paint SMOOOOOTH.

It's a soft clay and is used with a lubricant.

It's supposed to be more gentle than an orbital buffer....and alot more time intensive. (i'm just learning about this myself)

I bought my clay (and some other stuff) from www.griotsgarage.com - they seem to have good (but pricey) stuff.

I have clayed our ML, my C32, and even my old pickup truck, and I have to say it is AMAZING!

It will definitely solve your "rough" paint, quaz!

It is supposedly perfectly safe as long as you use enough of the lubricant. It sprays on, and is the same stuff they sell for cleaning up dirty places on your otherwise clean car.

Clean the car as best you can, dry it, clay it, polish it, wax it. The paint is literally glass smooth - you just can't help but caress it!

js,

I have to agree, the stuff is AMAZING.

If you want your car smooth as glass, get a clay bar and some clay lube and spend some quality time with your car. I know, I did it.

I start salivating when I see pics of my car all washed/dryed/clayed/polished/synthetic waxed/caranuba waxed.
Is that normal?

Temperature?

I live in Chicago...and it's been very cool here lately. The temps haven't been over 50 degrees consistently yet.

I'm thinking I need to wait until we get atleast 65 degrees?

What's the mimimum temp you would wax and polish your car?

Temperature

The minimum temperature for waxing will depend on the product. As a rule, I wouldn't wax if the temperature was below 50, and I would feel safer if it was 60.

Claying is the way to go! It is VERY easy to do, although it does take some time to do a nice job. It's not harmful at all!

Temps really depend on the product. I have seen some products that claim they can be used any temp. My rule of thumb is that it has to be warm enough for me not to need a coat (a light shirt, or sweatshirt is fine). I guess I would put that around 50-60.

Well first you say you own an ML500, then you say clay doesn't sound safe....Well I hate to tell you, you are wrong in both cases. When claying is done right, it takes aff all the embedded dirt off the paint and leaves and extremely smooth paint surface. I recommend the clay magic bar which can be found at autozone for $9.99. An excellent deal for top notch clay. btw, sungulent, why haven't you responded and taken pics of your engine bay, is it because you didn't have a chance to go to the dealer to take a pic of an ML500 they have on the lot?

$10 for a clay bar sounds like a good deal

Now all you need is some lube (don't take this the wrong way )

Actually for 9.99 it comes with the clay AND lube. Great Deal, and the best clay I have used. Beats, mothers, meguiars, and Pinnacle by a long shot!. Clay magic rules!

Clay will solve the problem.

I also recommend Claymagic over others. Pinnacle clay has been known to break up after a while, and claymagic does the same exact job for less money. Another benefit is that claymagic can be found at Autozone, which is convenient. I would suggest some type of protection in the form of wax or a polymer sealant after properly prepping the paint.
