CDI Fuel Filter Change

Any other CDI owners change their own fuel filter ? If so, any recommended procedures ? I do my own oil changes and want to stay on top of the fuel filter more often than every 26K especially during the ULSD introduction. Many diesel pundits indicate ULSD will cause some older contaminates to break loose in pipelines, storage tanks, delivery systems ect.

ULSD fears are all totally unfounded.

The fuel IS cleaner.

It is not A cleaner.

Your car is only 2 years old. I doubt it has much, if any, contaminates in the tank.

At 32GPH, I put a lot more fuel through the filter on my boat that I do in the CDI. Even so, it is amazing how dirty the filters are after a year. All you need to do is get one load of bad fuel and the critters will be hanging out in your tank.

I recently replaced the canister fuel filter on my 05 cdi. It's located on top of the engine, underneath the engine cover. You will need a torx socket to remove it and will need to replace the (two) fuel line clamps. The center-mounted bleed mechanism/sensor will need to be re-fitted to the new filter (which should include the two o-rings needed). After installing the new filter, bleed fuel from the bleed screw by attaching it to a hose and turning the key to its run (not start) position. It's a fairly easy job. I've heard that there's another fuel filter on the car but I'm not sure of its location. Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks everyone for the replies especially dpath. The procedure you outlined is very helpful. I really do enjoy doing some of my own maintenance on this vehicle. Not only do I save the bucks but am always amazed how well the car is engineered. Just hit 65,000 miles on the 2005 CDI and could not be happier with the vehicle. It still drives like new.

secondary fuel filter location 06 cdi ?

I've seen & now have replaced engine compartment fuel filter & am having a "where's waldo" moment trying to locate second filter (which looks similar to otjher one-where I was expecting the typical clear in-line one as on my 96. Any ideas ? I'm about to go into the trunk since I'll replace the main battery & was wondering.....

kind of hard to find something that does not exist. 05/06 E320CDI only has the one filter that needs to be serviced under the engine cover on the right as you face the car. Simple job to replace. I am using Hengst filters -- about $15-25 online -- have had no problems whatsoever.

Anyone had done the fuel filter change on 09 Bluetec? At 40,000 miles, it's due to be replaced, though previous service interval said 20,000 miles. Any place to recommend for the filter and the clips? Thanks!

Buy a Falcom ClickR set of pliers for the clamps. It makes life much easier with those type of clamps.
