Timing chain break a rarity

talked to a mercedez benz tech, been one since 1977. Recommend me not to change my timing chain. Said only worrys would be on a MB V8 saying havent seen one yet break. Im paying him around $150 for labor on the following. Bowden cable, valve adjustment, valve cover gasket, tensioner, thermostat housing gasket, and lubricating the throttle linkage. What a great price!!!! This tech told me the only thing you really really need to worry about your MB diesel is oil and fuel filters. "Change every 3k miles and fuel filters (inline and main) every other oil change (or 6k miles)"

Question 50-50

I am glad you found this man in one way.

He is saving you money by not changing everything as you wanted to do before meeting him.

However, if you take his advise on the oil and fuel filters:
"Change every 3k miles and fuel filters (inline and main) every other oil change (or 6k miles)"
You are wasting money.

While changing your oil every 3k miles was perhaps good advise many years ago, that is not true today.
Modern oils, especially the full synethics, don't need to be change at those riidiculously short intervals.

The same is true with fuel filters.

Thumbs down Maybe So.

If you follow that incorrect advise, you'll wind up spending almost 5 bills before the car sees 5K miles
just in Delo and parts even if you do those oil, oil filter and fuel filter changes yourself.

You are indeed using one of the better non-synthetic oils IMHO. But every 3K miles?

Dino oil every 3,000miles, religiously.

Synthetic every 5,000 (Up to 10K with oil sample analysis and filter change at 5K.)

Thumbs up Oil Analysis.

I've used Blackstone Laboratories for checking the condition of the oils in both my modified TDI and the
E-300 DT, also modified, and 20K miles turned out to be the time to change out those synthetics.

Many in the TDI group runs theirs 30K miles!

I starting using full synthetics even before Mobil Oil came out with their Mobil 1 5W-20.
Started using synthetics more than thirty years ago.

No longer have those diesels, but my trusty Zetec goes 10K miles between oil and filter changes
and the analysis always come back saying that the oil is still good for continued service.

It doesn't need any added oil either between changes using Mobil 1 5W-20.

Question You Do?

And so does Jiffy-Lube and every other "quickie" oil change business.
Forgot the oil companies. They surely love you wasteful types also.

Just because some people believe and so state that changinging ones' engine oil every 3K miles is necessary
does not make it so. When I was young and foolish, I used to change my oil every 1K miles.
That was long before either of you were born. In those days, detergent oil was not yet in full use.

Did you know that California is trying to shut Jiffy Lube down because they were not
doing those unnecessary changes that people such as yourself were paying for?

I guess they figure that changing engine oil that often is
not necessary either although they advertise differently.

Who needs Jiffy analLube? I do it myself for about $45 (2 gallons of oil, oil filter, and both fuel filters.)

You call it "wasteful", I call it preventive maintenance.

The oil and additives are not the problem, It's soot capacity. By 3000miles my soot level is almost 1% on dino oil. I do almost no highway driving so my soot levels are much higher than someone that does almost all highway miles. For a highway cruiser, I'd probably push dino oil to 5,000.

Cool there is an old saying

"if its not broken, dont fix it".... you can take this advise many different ways but the way i look at it - if changing my oil every 3k miles isnt depreciating my car in any way and in my opinion "extending my motor's life" then so be it!!!! i love jiffy lube back....*****s whats up now!!???!?!?!?
^^^what the "****" they wont let me say "*****s"^^^
