Smile Oil Level on Dip Stick

Just picked up my new ML diesel last week and I could not be happier!

I was poking around under the hood and checked the oil and the level was right smack in the middle of the dipstick, not low, not high.

I would be curious to find out what the level was for other members when their vehicle was new?

Also, with only 175 miles on the clock I am already getting around 21 mpg for mostly in town driving... Fantastic!

In the middle of the range is where it should be.

I agree, one should specifically avoid the old school advice and avoid going beyond the high mark "to guarantee sufficient oil". Half way is safe as the oil may not have all reached the pan when you check it.

Do you know why in the owner's manual MB states that over-filling will result in damage to the engine (or is it the catalytic converter)?

Maybe it is all in the mind but filling it above the half way mark seems to reduce the noise level of the engine.

Because it can result in the moving parts contacting the oil pool and slinging excessive oil on the the cylinder walls as well as the stress of the moving parts contacting the stationary pool. Remember how much a belly flop hurts? Think of the crank/rod ends doing that 50 times a second (3000rpm).

It probably reduces the noise because you have less open area to transmit noise vibrations/sound and more oil to absorb it.

It's for the last CDI, but it still applies.

I assume you don't figure that the v6 diesel suv's with CDI written on the liftgate count when you say that your 06 model is the last CDI. I am fairly certain that Mercedes Benz feels that the 3 liter CDI they are still producing is a CDI...
Just a thought

When I took delivery of our 08 ML the oil level was in the middle of the range. I have since changed the oil and using the amount spec'd in the owners manual for the change landed me right in the middle. I assume that this is where they want it.

You do not understand the meaning of the English word "last".

last 1 |last|
adjective [ attrib. ]
1 coming after all others in time or order; final : they caught the last bus. • met with or encountered after any others : the last house in the village. • the lowest in importance or rank : finishing in last place | [as complement ] he came last in the race. • ( the last) the least likely or suitable : addicts are often the last people to face up to their problems | the last thing she needed was a husband.

2 most recent in time; latest : last year | [ postpositive ] your letter of Sunday last. • immediately preceding in order; previous in a sequence : their last album. • most recently mentioned or enumerated : this last point is critical.

3 only remaining : it's our last hope. 4 single; individual : Holly was ceremoniously savoring every last crumb of her chocolate doughnut.
When I said "the last CDI" it meant the CDI before the current model.

I agree completely with you in the automotive sense that the last model truly means the previous one... My reply was directed more to the reply from harkgar saying that his 06 was the last model... Maybe I read it wrong.

I see. The V-type CDI is not new. MB has made the 4.0L all-aluminium V8 CDI since 1999, just not in the USA.

Not to mention the fact it causes the oil to foam, and foamy oil doesn't protect anything nor is the pump able to pump it with the same efficiency.

The V6 CDI is indeed new, and the old V8 is replaced by a new one as well.

The OM642 V6 CDI isn't new, it's been available in Europe since late 2004. The V8 only got a relatively minor update in 2005 with piezo injectors, intake manifold design change, new glowplug system and different ECU tuning (OM628-OM629).

I've got about 1,750 km on my GL320 and I was warned by the dealership it will need a couple of litres of oil within the first few thousand kilometres (for you American's...HAHAHA 1,865 miles) and sure shoot'in, it needed a litre and a half after I measured my dip stick and it was just below the middle mark and engine cold.

I just can't get over the cruising and comfort of my GL-DIESEL...IT'S SO AWESOME and I wish I could tell more people but they don't want to hear about it until I tell them I went almost 900 kilometres on a BRAND NEW engine in the city too boot! Oh well!

Did you mean you went for 900 km on a single full tank of diesel? What is that in liters/100 km or mpg?
