Mercedes and BMW V-8 diesels going away

My father lives in Europe and drives a BMW 535d M Sport.
3liter twin turbo, 282bhp, 428lb/ft. On his fifty mile commute he sees 34mpg. Superb for a car that pulls 0-60 in 5.9 and needs a limiter to stop it passing 155mph.

I would like to see Mercedes offer the sport package bodywork, suspension, and wheels on the E320CDI here in the USA. I am sure they do in Europe.

MB has equipped its E350 with sporty 18 inch Denebola alloys but not in the Bluetec. I wonder why.

These cars are built for enthusiast diesel drivers. There are not enough of them in the USA willing to pay big dollars for diesel V-8 sedans. Now the tree-huggers managed to kill them off totally.
It is amazing how a small number of tree-huggers in California succeeded in killing off powerful diesel drivers all over the world.
Cali needs to wake up and realize Hybrids and there lies about great mileage won;t even be around in ten years. Hydrogen, that may work. Guess I'm just old school and like my cars to run by either petrol or diesel but not a hotch potch of both.
Incidentaly, the first car I bought for myself was a Golf 1.9TDi PD. 150bhp, 236lb/ft, 0-60 in 8.5secs a tested135mph and it gave me 50mpg, 40mpg if I were gunning it.
VW group make great 4cyl diesels. They have now replaced the 1.9 with a slightly less characterful 2.0 but it is now available in 170bhp form. Makes the A3 a great all rounder but sadly not in the US (though I hear we may be getting the 3-door sometime).
As regards, Merc, well the 420CDI is bruiser like the 4.2tdi in the A8. However, they should work on TTing the 320CDI as diesels make less and less sense the bigger they become. Look at the 5.0 V10 from VW. Just 309bhp and mileage in the low 20s.

You are right about the economy-power ratio. There is little point apart from big torque, in driving a diesel if you want big fuel economy as well. The new VW 2.0 liter Jetta TDi should have 140 bhp or so, not 170 bhp.
The Best of Mercedes & AMG
Sadly, it now looks more like a now or never scenario.

My Golf was a 1.9tdi PD- 150bhp stock. They got 160bhp out of it at it's highest stock point.
New 2.0tdi offers 170ps in Europe
My friend had a chipped 1.9- 200bhp thanks to Revo.

But I am wonderin that how efficient will a V8 diesel on fuel economy if I drive on that thing slowly....
Since it can burn slowly & with more space to burn = more energy end up to the wheel rather than dumping minimum 50% out from exhaust gas...
But the only thing I always hear is WOW, it's VVVV888888, it eat gas or whatever like crazy....

Funny thing is many PPL do think & believe a smaller engine do equals to better....

All you really need to get that amount of power like those one in Euro is just fuel pump + injector + Turbo (may be intercooler) + ECU
So even you get all those good stuff from Europe, the tranny will blow...
Another thing which seems to drives me nuts about VW and that TDI engine is lots of maintenance... I hardly heard of anyone who can drive their VW without any maintenance (Like a Toyota, just regular oil change, and fix some wear & tear, then go)
