what oil to use ??
i'm the owner of a R350 bluetec, 2011, i got it used a little while ago, and had a local shop change oil and filter around 8000 km ago ( i am pretty shure they used 5w40 castrol edge, i remember the mechanic showing me one of the one liter bottles with the 229.51 specification on it ).
now, i'm going to do the oil and filter change myself, easy and cheaper. I'm going to use 0w40 because the winters are verry cold out here ( canada, quebec ).
the only 2 oils that meet the MB 229.51 requirements ( source MB website ) are : castrol edge stp 0w40 and mobil 1 esp 0w40.
Question, witch one is the best, witch one should i use? ( could find some castrol in one liter bottles, could not yet find mobile 1 in my area ). Comes down to the tricky question, castrol edge VS mobile 1.........
second question : could find Mobile 1 DELVAC esp 0w40 oil, this one is advertised on mobile website to be heavy duty disel engin oil fit for engines using EGR and catalitic filter and so on.........could i use it? It's not listed on MB's website nor heawing a 229.51 certification BUT, wondering, if it's fit for diesel truck engin that run hours and hours under load, could it be ok in mine??
thank you guys

Looking at the Bevo list, the 5w-30 grade is the most prevalent by far.

You are going to stick with w40 because you say it is recommended for your car but wish to look into using Delvac which is not recommended & not even listed as 229.51.
I would have thought a truck engine lubrication requirements would be a lot different to a small MB diesel.
I am looking forward as you are , to a triboligist to tell us why.

Many Heavy Duty HDEO's do not meet many of the Benz passenger car diesel requirements such as HTHS of the base fluid & will bugger up the emissions gear such as Cats & regen units.

The list of oils shrinks pretty drastically.
Familiarize yourself with linked site.
Here is English version listing cars https://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/d/d/en/Spec_223_2.pdf
and once you find specifications for your engine you can surf from here https://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/bevol...ets-sort1.html

I always present myself as business owner and they sell me parts at deep discounts.
In USA one of the lowest priced warehouses is autohousaz.com.
When it come to MB coolant, the local dealer sold it to me like 5% cheaper.
I figured out that since autohous offers free shipping and coolant is kind of heavy for its value, they included shipping in the price.
Then where I live we still have oldfashion automotive part chain. One of those, where you ask for "M8x25x1.5 bolt" and they will know what you are talking about without asking for VIN.
Somehow the chain manage to get fluids at good discounts. I was buying Red Line products from them cheaper than manufacturer counter (20 miles away)
They have MB coolants and whole line M1 oils.

So, an oil may meet the 229.52 spec, but it may need to be changed more frequently. If I recall correctly, long-life oils are recommended for 17,000kms and standard oils 12,000kms. This is not always explicit in the literature.
There's a lot of discussion about whether different brands/qualities/etc really make that much of a difference, but I think the increasing frequency of seized engines and sludging problems suggests that it does.

IMHO it was either some kind of chemistry that made the jelly, or the dealer did not change the oil for long time, while stamping the book.
Chemistry does do tricks occasionally. I deal with Ford 6l Powerstroke where replaced oil cooler clogged after 10,000 miles. I put the best oil (T6) and Mercedes coolant in the truck, yet something weird went on. I cut the cooler for inspection and did not see any dirt. Plan to split the layers and check more.
Bottom line, in modern engines with everything exposed to very high stress and several different materials some unpredictable can easy happen
Lets hope the pending oil analysis will shed some light.
