240D needs a new transmission
Hi everyone,
My Mercedes needs a new transmission. I can't do the work myself, and the transmission shop quoted me between $2000 and $3000 to rebuild it. The body and interior of my car are in ok condition, and the car has no other major problems. There are 200,000 miles on the odometer, and the engine works great. I also have a strong sentimental attachment to the car. So what do you think, should I pay for the new transmission, try and sell the thing, or try and cash for clunkers it (right now the car wont get in gear, so that may not be an option). Thanks for your help.

So this is W123 body.
Still very popular in California with lot of parts available and mechanics pretty familiar with them, but you choose to not disclosure your location

Haha, sorry, new to this site. I'm in the Bay Area (like you). Where's good to go to look for used transmission?

Junk yards are forced out of Bay Area, there is one -pick n pull in Richmond, but I don't think you want to pull old transmission from junk yard?
I DIY so I don't use any shops, but I heard about transmission rebuild shop run by German guy in Los Angeles area that gives good guarantees.
Google it, or go to W123 section and maybe someone with direct experience will give you better details.
Good luck.

Another tough- there is a member on other forum handle MAVA.
He is in Sacramento area and specialize in digital transmissions, but wont't hurt to ask him about recommendations.

Hopefully we are done with all the shoulda, coulda misinformation---your best bet is to take your own advice and have the transmission shop rebuild the transmission. You have a warrantee and don't have to worry about spending time in junk yards looking for a piece of crap and then find an installer to install a suspect transmission with no warrantee---sounds like a no brainer to me!!
