OM642 EGR/intake cleaning
Looks like MB came out with a bulletin advising service to clean the short Egr pipe(front of the engine refered to as egr admission hose) every 40k miles. What I'm looking for is a way to tap into the intake system of a running engine (so without taking it apart) that I could spray in the cleaner at a pressure which would end up as a nice gush of a mist.
Has any one done it? What's the ideal spot to tap in? Ideally I'd like to get rid of the EGR system as I see it as the main culprit of diesel engine problems but for now, I'll remove the egr admission pipe and clean it following with a spray of the cleaner.

Sadly I don't. I was tipped off by a mechanic on my recent visit to get my alignment. I have tried to find it in my old eBay copy of WIS. I have also called my Indy shop and the guy said:"Son, this isn't a library, we fix cars here!". I had a good chuckle.

When you remove the 3 bolts, it just pulls off. Clean it with brake cleaner, throttle body cleaner or acetone or whatever you got. Torque is 15N.m on those bolts to reimstall.
here's some pictures off the net...

I'm not sure! Your motor setup looks different than my E 320. Perhaps other members can help?
I should add that the pipe you're pointing out looks like that's the one but it's so much more thicker than on an E class OM642. At least that's what I can see from your picture.

GoodByeHonda, is the EGR pipe bolted inside of the engine (underneath those other pipes)? I see the 3 bolts on the front of the engine, is that the only thing holding that pipe in place? Thanks

I'm sorry, but which of my previous questions is correct?
- The pipe has bolts on each side of the pipe
- The pipe is only bolted down with those three in the front?
If the pipe is bolted down on the inside of the engine, below the other pipes, is it possible to remove it without removing those other pipes?
Additionally, do you have the part numbers for those gaskets?
Thanks for your help

DanD I have the same gen w166 with the Bluetec motor. Did you find out if the picture you shared is the correct tube to remove and clean? Wondering how difficult it is to remove the tube.

On the side note: EGR valve it on another side, by the firewall. So maybe the right pipe is over there. No so sure.

With w211 E320, it may be possible to remove just the egr pipe but have a look at my throttle body pipe. I had a solid 3mm of deposits from the egr pipe arrachement point to intake manifolds. I cleaned intake manifolds as much as I could reach and got all the loose pieces out.
I replaced all the gaskets, even the throtte body gaskets on each side.
fyi, you can use 8mm socket for E8 bolts. That's ONLY if you don't have a tall E set. (You'll need it for the left side 2 bolts that attach the pipe to the bracket)
looking at the state of my intakes, I should have just changed the oil cooler gasket. But it seems that we can utilize the muffler port to spray in Liqui Moly cleaner.
will work on adapter soon....

Seems the deposits come in different strength on different engines. Here is the best picture I have of it from my 180,000 miles engine.
The deposit are definitely here, but others have more of them at 120k. My car drove 160k in TN and 20k in CA.

I have a code for sticky EGR...that's 20k Miles after Mercedes had to torch it off and replace one under warranty and clean it...
My plan is Hydrogen Carbon Cleaning...for an Hr...which is like Double time...then I'm going to add a Pre-Turbo Water-Meth in the future...and get a catch can for the PCV system.
That should keep it pretty clean after that...I'll report back ina week or 2 with the hydrogen cleaning results.

Actually I have 71k and Merc last serviced (****ty) at 55k...so thats basically 20k...I'm gonna get this and the tensioner issue handled this week. Afterwards I'm gonna start doing Carbon Cleaning every 5k Oil change with Redline 20w-50 and Ceratec. This **** is going 300k or it's going into the ocean...

Funny, I just received an email today from Mr Stephen himself, along with two attachments for the intake/EGR cleaner.

The below may help you:
"Mercedes has now started to recommend the EGR valve be cleaned every 40000 miles. Burnt oil clogs it. We found a way to really clean the EGR & the rest of the emission system. We took the Liqui Moly kit for cleaning the DPF, & modified it. We remove the sensor in the EGR pipe. We made an adapter that threads into the EGR pipe & connect it to the Liqui Moly gun in their DPF cleaning tool. We put BG 245 diesel fuel system cleaner into the gun & spray the BG 245 cleaner straight into the EGR pipe as the engine is running. The BG 245 really cuts through the crud in the EGR system & it cleans the DPF at the same time. The whole system is getting a serious cleaning. This is simple, once you make up all the adapters to make it work."
