2005 E320 cdi injection pump problems

2005 E320 cdi injection pump problems

Had a no-start issue. Kept getting a low fuel pressure code took the injection pump off and here's what I found! Has anyone ever dealt with this? Looks like it cracked the drive adapter and gear.

Drive adapter

Chewed up injection pump

Drive gear.

I have seen reports of badly worn adapter and pump shaft, dim memory of one broken gear shaft end.
Lately there was on case in UK forum where bad fuel pump installation caused bent cam shaft

Wow! Did they ever find out what the cause was?
I brought this car (my second one) with a bad case of black death. So bad it had burnt through the injector wires on the first four injectors.
Didn't know if that could cause the pressures to spike and break the drive?

It cant be pressure related, I think they messed up something when changing the pump...

I have seen pictures of much worse pump shafts, Can't imagine what caused your failure...

Is there any information out there on part numbers?
Also any links/pictures of others that have delt with this! Having real hard time finding any info on this?

My thoughts on the pressure caused failure were along the lines of hydro locking potentially if the return could not feed it back fast enough while the 4 injectors were shorted out.

Run your VIN at www.mbepc.net should get a list of all part numbers for you vehicle.

Get yourself an offline copy of WIS for your vehicle, then you can look up any repair by factory procedure

Cost less than $30.00 look around, many places{I have be scolded for mention places that sell]

My opinion.....The best $30.00 I ever spent for my MB vehicle

As above, WIS is your way (of course you get EPC,WIS, Star finder etc. if you buy clone SDS, THAT'S best few hundred I ever spent to my car... )

I still doubt over pressure in pump would have done it (relief valve opens in milliseconds), but pump itself can be seized. Or adapter broke and somehow bent the axle... IDK

Rossafuss on benzworld posted several nice topics about those engines. He drives 1 with over 400k miles. He also made some nice videos on youtube.
you might find his topic about the pump already, or PM him for extra advice.

Thank you for the replies! How do you have the wis manual. Although it is a little tricky to muddle through. How to have a good Alltel scanner which is helpful most of the time but I do need to look into a clone SDS! I also found some of Rossafuss post very helpful. I pulled everything apart yesterday and got the necessary Parts ordered.

OM648 Injection pump IItermediate Gear part #646-050-03-05

OM 648 Injection pump follower part# 000-077-23-09

It did scrape at the head a bit 😠

New gear installed

Back together
Installed the new gear and driver. Reassembled and it started right up! Now I just got to figure out a misfire on cylinder 1 for the first 5 minutes when the engines cold. Thanks so much for the feedback everyone!

Good to hear it is back together.
For injector slight misfire, the BG cleaners help a lot, but at some point you might need new injector tip, or whole new thing.
