Track down some “Valvoline Premium Blue RESTORE” engine oil. It works.

From a Diesel oil perspective, the oils spec'd for these new engines with all the pollution systems are sketchy at best. Use the wrong oil and you risk trashing the engine, or trashing the SCR/DPF. The only MB spec listed for this oil is 228.31. Make sure that will work for you!

You only use the RESTORE for one oil change every 100K miles. I don’t think that will hurt any of the items mentioned above.

The OM642 engine in my 9000 lb Sprinter just passed 213,000 miles. We just finished almost 6000 miles trip around lower states.
I added oil only once.
We have owners on Sprinter forum reporting >600,000 miles on those vehicles.

My 2013 GL350 (OM642) has around 225K miles on it and uses no more than 1/2qt of oil between 5-6k mile oil changes. I take off the inspection pan once a year and it’s always clean as a pin. I run Delvac 1 ESP 5W-40 in it and if I have to replace the DPF so be it but I will say I routinely get 475-500 miles between regens. Trust me, I’ll tell you guys if I have any oil related problems & take the heat for using the wrong oil.

Ditto what @olesouthernboy stated. One cycle of Valvoline PBR shouldn't kill your DPF.

Another easier to find source of oil that will clean rings is from High Performance Lubricants (sold at their online store (Advance Lubrication Inc). Bob is the Oil Guy forum has many threads with photos and used oil analysis that show it does as claimed. They are made with high content of Ester and AN oils to clean the rings and everything else. They are not flushes and do not contain any solvents or harsh chemicals. I used their Euro 229.51/LL04 oil to clean deposits out of a BMW N52 I bought in one 5k mile OCI. Worked as advertised. All the brown crusty stuff was gone from the head and oil consumption is zero.

I have the Euro 5W-30 229,51 "compliant" HPL oil in my 2008 E320 OM642 currently. Does NOT need to be cleaned as at only 161k miles it still doesn't burn any oil with 5k OCIs (mostly annual changes) of Castrol C3 oil from new. I did change the CCV system components at 120k miles.

I also use a Mann ProVent 200 coalescing filter in between the CCV & intake. That is where most of the oil used in the 5-6k OCI’s goes. I probably drain off 0.2-0.3 quarts between changes.

I am using 229.52 only. Valvoline has a good deal on amazon for 15l pack.

My GL320 CDI engine is marked 228.51/229.51

229.52 is just to allow 30W for better fuel economy (Probably has some improved wear specs to allow the lighter weight.)

There are approved Xw-40 oils on the official BEVO list. One only needs to check rather than listening to ***** and company.
This conspiracy theory needs to go away.

Our 2008 E320 does have 228.51 in the Owner's Manual and on the sticker on the valve cover.
Delo 400 XLE is listed on the truck approval sheets on the Mercedes Bevo list. Mercedes BEVO 228.51
I haven't tried it though because 229.5x is easy to find and doesn't cost more in my area.

Don't worry, I am not buying in to the "229.51 kills engines", line, but definitely thinking that there are0 advantages to an oil formulated primarily for diesel (228.51) spec.

Deli 400 is certainty approved for a lot more diesel engines than Mobil1 ESP3.

now that I an not on IL, I am not as worried about having a 0w oil.

Yes, kajtec1. I've been one of the few who, like you, tell people that 229.52 has improved oxidation spec for a reason.
Hello Jell-O. I do believe that bio-diesel in the mixtures are a part of the problem.

Mercedes has stated in bulletins not to use more than 5% bio and also developed the 229.52 spec to address oxidation.
Believe Mercedes or not. Personal choice.

MB never was proved to cheat on emissions. The Bluetec settlement is about not delivering what was promised and it is settlement, so nothing was proved, or admitted.
