e550 v8, turbo vs NA

Hi, it seems like few 2012 e550s are being offered for a good price but they come with bi-turbo v8 compared to the previous version.

I did have bad experience with bmw 335 twin turbo engine,, high pressure fuel pump failure, injectors, carbon build up, leaks everywhere, turbo waste gate rattle etc.

I know the bi-turbo is more powerful and efficient but which one is more reliable engine and which on is better for mods?

Thank you.

Go for the TT-V8!!

M278 has proven to be bulletproof and much easier to get more power out of. A simple stage 1 ECU tune yields excellent gains.

It is direct injection with twin turbo.
I drive really short distance, no joke (3.4km daily).
Winter time the engine doesn't even warm up.
Is it better to stick with NA or still go with the twin turbo?

Thank you.

Get the TT-V8.
Maybe that will encourage you to drive a bit more than just the 3.4 km daily. Enjoy the car!

I don't think you'd be disappointed with the TT-V8.

Again, I'm not concerned about power, I'm more concerned of reliability. Turbo engines are always pushed more compared to na.
Any thoughts on that?

The NA models are older than the TTV8's. By default the NA vehicles will generally have more miles on them. So you have to take into account how well each has been treated and maintained by their previous owners. Not a simple apples to apples comparison.

Fair enough,
But that doesn't answer the question which engine is more reliable, newer doesn't always mean better, more parts to fail in the turbo as it is forced engine. Let's say I find both same mileage, reliability wise which one is considered better? Thank you

From my perspective, I have seen luxury brand NA engines that were always in the shop for something and other luxury brand turbo models that would be considered highly reliable. It varies by make, model and year built, so I don't have a bias either way. As others have said here, the M278 TT is a very reliable engine. Reliability is one of the reasons I chose this car. If you are concerned about getting another turbo in general, after your very bad experience with the BMW you had, then maybe you would be more comfortable with the older NA E550. Don't get something you are going to be constantly fretting about.

Turbos are everywhere now. Very few cars are NA. I had a flawless version of the BMW N54 engine. Wonderful car, and should have kept it.
I'm not sure how long I will keep my '14 E550 cabriolet, but they use(d) the M278 on the S class, GLs and MLs. Pretty broad spectrum of MBs top of the line cars. So if I go long term, I'm not too worried about an early engine failure. So worth it though- the car is stunningly fast.

Turbos are now so reliable, they will outlast the engine they boost. TT V8 is a wonderful engine.

I have the NA 550 - wonderful engine. I can't even imagine that the turbo engines will last longer. We'll see.

The TT V8 in the E550 Cab pulls like a freight train and the car as a whole will shock the drivers of more sporting cars with its acceleration off the line.
