Cigarette socket at Center Console Wiring Questions

I like to add / splice a female cigarette lighter socket to the existing front cigarette socket under the ashtray at the center console for my dash cam. I do not want to touch the fuse panel.

As I know, there is a white color plug that connected to the cigarette socket. I like to splice the positive wire and the negative wire from the new female socket to the wires from the cigarette plug. However, I do not know which wire from the plug is positive or negative.

Anyone knows? Please help, thanks.

Instead of "splicing" into the car's wiring harness, just get a "piggyback" fuse/hot lead and plug it into a switched fuse socket?

Yes, I know but you have to get a dash cam kit as well to convert the 12V to 5V as well to the dash cam. As I mentioned before, I do not want to touch the fuse box as for the DIY project.

The reason that I want to tap a female cigarette socket to the existing cigarette socket plug because I just want a simple set up. Since the ashtray door cannot be closed now due to the car adapter and the usb cable, the only simplest way to solve the problem is tapping the wires so that I can hide the new female cigarette socket, car adapter and the USB cable under the glove box.

You might want to do a search for this on Amazon. It or something like it could be a simpler solution.

Thank you for your suggestion but what I want to do is NOT to put the car adapter to the coin tray so that I can close it.

Have you looked at tapping into the rear view mirror?

No. The wires behind the cover on the windshield involved so many wires. Also, it is very hard the hide the excessive dash cam wire behind the cover.

The ideal location is still splicing the wires from the cigarette lighter socket under the the ashtray at the center console.

So you dont know and cant figure out power and ground but you want to mess with the electronics in your car? that sounds like a great idea.

I am going to use a multi-meter to find out the power. If it is so complicated, I will take it to a shop and install the dash cam kit with fuse.
