Oil Cooler seals replaced but oil still coming out of the bell housing!!!
Morning guys!
I had my oil cooler seals replaced along with a whole pack of other seals on my E350 last week. I am due to bring the car back to the mechanic as im noticing oil still dripping out of the bell housing. What else could this be?
I also have noticed a little leak under the starter motor coming out of the join for the upper sump which i believe goes through into the bell housing. Is it possible that the rear main seal is leaking too?
Any suggestions? Oil leaks are such a pi** take to find!
Thanks

Unfortunately, yes... but should have been caught the first time. Not a very good mechanic, apparently. I'd only take it there again only if he's going to do the labor for free, since he screwed up, and you already paid for the job. If not, find a better one, and try to get your money back somehow. Good luck.

The car is booked in to get the rear crankshaft seal replaced. Is this a common problem with these engines? That could be the only possible reason why there is oil in the bell housing considering the oil cooler seals have been replaced. Orange turbo seals have also been replaced.
Any other suggestions?

Hey guys,
2008 e320 300k miles.
I know this topic is endless. I changed my oil cooler gaskets twice, cleaned everything, new original MB gaskets, torqued to code, you know, like you would do it for yourself. 10 months later it leaks again. Do you know if this is its common problem, is there something needs to be done to prevent this leak in the future? Please let me know

Just a bad design from MB on those engines. the OM642 will find a way to leak from the oil cooler and like the first few people in the thread stated, even if you clean it the best you can it may still appear that you have an oil leak. The intake gasket on the intake of the turbocharger can tear and cause an oil leak.. The plastic intake that has the mass air sensors can crack at the turbo and cause an oil leak. The intercooler/charge air hoses can tear or crack and cause an oil leak. Then when you finally have all this situated, the oil you thought was all cleaned up was actually trapped between the bell housing of the transmission and the bell housing flange on the rear of the engine, making it look like a rear main seal. I have only replaced 1 rear main seal on the OM642 engine. 99% of the time, the oil leak is from incomplete cleaning after repairs or something ontop of the engine (intake, gaskets, oil cooler, etc).

I'll give it one more time. The engine sound very good, even with 300k miles on it. That's why I don't want to give UP. I added 7 quarts of oil in 7.500 miles. Usual I would see oil on the bumper, but mine is clean. where that much of oil goes? I don't even need to do an oil change any more.

Well, if you aren't seeing bad leaks wherever you park your car, then the engine may be eating that oil and burning it. You may also want to check your coolant reservoir and see if the oil and coolant are mixing.

That's the magic, Air cooler empty, No mix with water or oil, no smoke. no drops when running not moving. I will put dipper back with white cloth to see if its squirting while driving.

Its diesel... you might see a small amount of extra smoke, but with all the catalysts in the exhaust, you might never see or smell anything abnormal.

This sound legit, because I got this burn diesel fume lately when I turn heat on. How can I be 100% sure that this is the problem? Compression test? Can I do it myself?
