Ture wear

Had the car serviced today and with 16,500 kms on it, the
dealer showed me the front tyres are almost worn out on the outside. He claims this is normal for modern day Benzs. Now this is my 4th Benz and the one before was a 2012 C63 and even though that was way more powerful I was getting 20,000 kms out of a set of tyres. Now before anyone says it is all about how you drive, I am 68 and drive very conservatively. Thoughts?
please excuse the misspelt heading, I can't work out how to edit the word Ture to tyre.

Sounds like your dealer was trying to cover up an alignment problem for which he may have been responsible.

Only worn on the outsides? That suggests the toe in on the tracking is out, or the camber is wrong, but assuming you haven't changed the suspension (lowering wears the insides due to camber change). If it is worn on both edges but not the middle, that suggests under inflated tyres.

I'd get the geometry checked with a 4 wheel laser alignment.

The other factor of course is what tyres are fitted as they all wear at different rates and those could just be a soft compound.

They are conti sports. Worn just on the very outsides and the pressure is spot on. Booked in for new tyres this coming Tuesday . Stock standard factory settings on everything.

Does your car have "Extended Mobility" (aka run-flat) tires, or conventional tires? My car has conventional tires (with a spare in the trunk/boot); it just turned 20,000 miles and the original tires are nowhere near worn out. My previous car was a BMW with run-flats, and while they did seem to wear faster than conventional tires, I still got a lot more mileage out of them than you have. I suspect an alignment problem.

I agree with the Judge stated earlier that it is definitely an alignment issue. The issue is the "toe" is out of spec. When the tire wears more on the outside, it's too much "toe in". When it's wearing more on the inside, it's too much "toe out". Get an alignment from a tire specialist and forget about your dealer. Ask the specialist to "center on the spec". That is, if the toe calls for -0.04 to +0.02 then the center point is -0.02. That's where you want the toe to be set. It does not take much to get abnormal wear if you set it at +0.02, which is within spec.

Since your are getting new tires, get the tire guy to "center" the number as described above. Hope this helps.

Had the tyres changed yesterday and the wheel alignment checked. Nothing wrong with the alignment. Tyre place says most current MB cars are getting between 15,000 and 20,000 kms from tyres. Pretty crook set up I would say if that is the case. This is my 4th MB and whilst the C63 ate tyres, no other ones did.

I have 14K miles on mine and it's not even half worn, and I don't drive like an old lady either. I just don't believe what Tyre Place said about MB cars getting 9K to 12K miles, no such thing! As for C63 with softert compound tires, I do believe that the tire life is shorter.

I don't buy it either. I'm well into 20,000 miles and my original Michelins have at least half of their overall life expectancy remaining.

What kind of tires? I've got 15K miles on my Pirelli PZero Nero GT's and they aren't showing any wear at all.

If they're the the ones I think they are, They're a summer tire and they only have a treadwear rating of 280, which is pretty low. The P Zero Nero All Seasons I have are rated at 400 (also low, but not that bad).

In general, summer tires wear out a lot faster than all season tires, but perform better and are usually quieter.
