Gasoline smell around rear driver side tire.

On two occasions I’ve come to my car after it has been sitting and could smell gasoline near the rear driver side tire. I could also smell faint gasoline in the cabin after filling the tank one time but it went away quickly after. The fuel pumps were recently replaced and I thought they may be cracked or leaking but I had a mechanic as well as myself inspect them and there appears to be no leaking in the area. I thought maybe the charcoal filter but that would be on the passenger side. I am not really sure what would leak gas or gas vapor on the driver side wheel well though.

Pull up the rear seat bottom and see if the smell comes from this area. It’s likely related to the fuel pump repair work recently done. The in-tank components may not have been properly resealed.

Charcoal canister/shutoff valve are located here. Remove rear fender liner and visually check if fine smoke test evap system for leaks.

i inspected both and could not find a leak. I even filled the tank with the seats removed and drove around but no leak was present. There is a faint smell of gas when I put my nose right on the fuel pump, I am not sure if this is normal but there is nothing wet around the pumps.

Fumes can travel anyway, checked fuel tank @ interior, time to check exterior - tank & fuel lines.

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread. I have this same issue. Did you ever resolve the problem? I have an additional issue. When parked on a slight nose down grade for 4+ hours it seems to lose fuel prime and it takes longer, more turn overs to start.

Hey all found the culprit. It looks like it might be the o-ring on that fuel line. Any ideas on how to remove that fuel line?

So it looks like the fuel is actually coming out of the fuel line. I pulled it off cleaned it all down. I ordered the new line from MB should be in at RBM Alpharetta tomorrow anyone curious about the part number - A204-470-18-24

Alright the saga continues I am not sure that is the correct part number, I have to verify, the first part I got looked right but was about 6" too short, we ordered the right one which was about $50 less. BTW, because of the frame stiffeners on the cabriolet, you can't drop the tank more than about an inch, that fuel line was a bear to R&R. Once I installed it, I was still getting fuel, I took a sharpie and traced around the neck of the suction pump outlet, and then wiped it away, and there is a hairline crack 60% around the base of the neck. I mixed up some jbweld waterweld and smeared on there after a thorough cleaning and scuffing with sand paper, let it cure over night and tested, currently no leaks. I ordered a new suction pump, and will replace it the next free weekend that I have.

ok so the correct part for a C207/A207 is A204-470-14-24 it is about 6 inchs longer and $50 less than the one I originally mentioned. I did order a new Hella suction pump. 2184700994. I have a FlexFuel car so, you have to verify that it is flex fuel compatible.

Takeaways.
1. make sure your fuel tank is 1/4 tank or lower
2. use a rope or in my case a fish tape connected to the existing lines of suction pump, that you can then connect to the new ones to easily pull back through. I am sure you can fish them by hand but this just makes it easier.
3. don't cheap out and try to use a hammer and screwdriver/chisel to get the lock rings off... they won't budge. I bought this (
Amazon Amazon
) and with a breaker bar it was still a very hard pull to get them off/fully seated when putting them back.
4. thoroughly clean the areas around the pumps before removing the rings. I drop some dirt down in the tank, had to go in after it, even with doing what I though was an ok job of cleaning.

Hello konigstiger, I just came across this thread and I have a similar issue. I know you are extremely knowledgable!

My dealership service advisor said that my charcoal canister is bad/wet with fuel and needs to be replaced. They said it is part # 212-470-02-59-64. However, they are saying the part cannot be found anywhere in the US, and Germany doesn't have it either (and they are not producing it). Do you know if there is a cross-reference or updated/compatible part number I can get?

I am desperate at this point, because it is throwing a CEL and the car sometimes stalls.
