Map and Voice Recognition Data Software Updates
This weekend I learned that over-the-air updates for 2019 cars in the USA only apply to map data for your home region. In my case that’s the Eastern US states. I couldn’t find a way to change the automatic over-the-air update region from the Eastern region. Other regions of the US and voice recognition software updates must be done via USB. My Eastern region maps had been successfully updated over-the-air from version 13 to version 14. That seemed to take weeks. Today I used the Mercedes me connect web portal to download the Eastern region version 15 map update and the latest voice recognition software to a USB drive and install it in the car. It worked flawlessly and the update process only took about 15 minutes. The download to USB from the web portal seemed to take longer. The detailed instructions are conveniently located in the web portal.
There are 8 regions; Eastern, Central, Southern, Great Lakes, Western, Alaska, Canada and Mexico.I couldn’t find any information describing which states are included in each map region. Alaska, Canada and Mexico are self-explanatory.
Has anyone else tried this yet? Has anyone found a description of which states are included in each region? I’d also like to have a list or description of the changes each update provides. The Voice Recognition Data also updated, but I don’t really know what that means or if I’ll ever notice a difference.

This is the response I finally got from MB Connect. The regions don't quite match the regions in the Mercedes me connect portal, but this is still helpful.

Midwest (Prior to June 1984, the Midwest Region was designated as the North Central Region.)[7]

But it turns out there's a COMAND firmware update that fixes this bug, and my dealer reflashed the head unit and all is cool again. So any other nav geek who likes to navigate to phone contacts, be aware.

I updated last week and it introduced a bug. I don't think most people use the system by navigating to their phone contact (especially when CarPlay or Android Auto does it). But I like that ability. With the latest map update, if the contact address didn't explicitly state US as the country, you get the "Address is missing information" message. It used to just assume US if the country field was blank.
But it turns out there's a COMAND firmware update that fixes this bug, and my dealer reflashed the head unit and all is cool again. So any other nav geek who likes to navigate to phone contacts, be aware.

I agree that it’s not clear. I think the regions Mercedes gave me apply to many different Nav systems. It’s definitely not specific to our cars. I would guess that Pennsylvania is likely in the Eastern Region. If you want to be sure you get the latest updates for your trip, just update all the regions, or at least do the Eastern, Central and Great Lakes regions.

Map update to 2020 Version 19.0 (V370) is available for North America. All the US states, Canada and Mexico are about 19GB. It took about 45 minutes to install.
