W238 E400 Suspension or Brake Noise

Hi all,

I have a W238 E400 AMG pack coupe for past 18 months and in the past 9 months or more when I’m driving at 35-40mph (60 kph) on flat undulating roads I hear on the left hand side a high pitched singing noise for periods of time (upwards of 10-20 seconds), which sounds like the suspension or possibly the brake pads/disc. To be clear its not noisey brakes under load.

The sound is not the noise of wind whistling, the sound also seems moves up an down in pitch on rolling undulations in the road. I’m thinking it could be suspension lacking lubrication but I can’t really tell. The noise seems to disappear on applying brake pressure (made me think of a warped disc) but then equally its is non-existent at slow speeds and nor does it sound to me like squeaky brakes.

I took back to the dealer in April who found it hard to replicate although I showed him a video of the noise, he thought at the it was to do with the steering column which I said it wasn’t. At any rate their work hasn’t worked and I have it booked in again shortly but was hoping for some wisdom from this group would assist!? Has anyone else had this issue?

Thanks

The noise

Have been to dealer twice and they acknowledge the issue. It seems to be suspension or brake related and MB Germany have said it has been an issue with a ‘small’ number of cars. Happens at 60-70km and a constant 1,500 revs. Here’s hoping it’s now resolved.

Well after numerous trips over the past 12 months (new wheel bearing, pads, pad springs, etc etc) it seems it is the brake pads rattling at a certain frequency and copper grease is the only thing that will stop/suppress the noise. We couldn’t use spray grease as it needs the thickness of the grease to work. Hope this is helpful to anyone else that has the same problem.....I’m now hoping the noise won’t return anytime soon!

Sadly noise is back again. Given the solution worked for a while I’m sure it’s to do with how the brake pads are sitting. I’m going to try amd switch out of OEM pads and thinking of EBC Red Stuff as it’s low noise and low dust along with some ceratec paste. Anyone else used any other pads?

Well it’s now 2023 and the noise has got worse. I’m now just waiting for a non-oem set of discs and pads. Anyone know of rear discs for the coupe?

Any chance for you to record the noise for us to hear?

You won’t believe what I’m sure the source of the noise was from! Had to replace the original rear runflats due to the event in the photo. Decided to switch to non-runflats and ever since have never heard the sound again. I’m left wondering whether tyre bead/wheel rim were rubbing on each other? Hoping the sounds doesn’t come back, but right now it’s seems I have

the solution.

Wow! I despise runflats, have them now on my EQE. On my previous E coupe I replaced them with conventional tires and the difference was amazing. Though it seems odd that after all this time that piece of metal didn't work its way out. Good luck either way.

Great job OP! I just picked up a C238 of my own and I love it yet I feel the run-flats hold it back. Lucky/Unlucky for me (kind of both) the selling dealer installed 4 all-new Michelin Primacy 3 ZF (run-flat) on the car. While I appreciate the tires being brand new, I would much rather have conventional tires. If given the opportunity to swap for new conventional tires for less than a few hundred bucks, I would take it!

Might be able to sell the run-flats and recoupe some cost to put on new non run-flats. I mean, the run-flats assuming is MOE (Mercedes-Original Extended), check the tire sidewall for this info should be worth a pretty dime.

Ah! Looks like they all are MOE. Had no idea what that was until now. (see attached)

Any idea how much they might be worth with all their tread left? How would you go about selling them?

Price varies by region but throw it on this forum's market place and go from there : )
