Chip Tuning

Does anyone have experience with aftermarket chip tuning? There is a company called RaceChip which claims to have products to increase HP, TQ and MPG in my E350 Cabriolet for around $500. A local speed shop quoted me around $3K (which includes changing manifold, headers, etc., etc.) . I'm only looking for a bit more performance (sports) without having to completely rebuild. Anyone???

I had once, on a 2016 e400 cabrio. Found OE Tuning on this forum, sent them the ECU, they reprogrammed it and I got it back in few days. They stated that there should be a gain from stock 329 to 400 hp. I never had a dyno test done, so those numbers are not confirmed. But the car drove much better after that, and faster. I spent around $1300

Now I want to do it in a 2019 e450, this time a did a deeper research and have same question as you. There are hand held products and reprogramming of the ECU itself. Prices from $250 to $2000, hp gains promised from 50 to 100. I spoke to AMR rep, he offered a handheld tuner for $2K. I asked why is it that much vs the racechip for $750, he stated that the racechip is not doing it properly and can damage the engine. I researched and could find any negative feedback on it though. So Idk

Can someone really explain this whole thing please?

Another question.

Is there any tuner that will confirm promised numbers of hp and tq by running a dyno test before and after I install their product??

I will always question a "competitor's" negative comments when there is no independent verification of those claims. It's all a crap shoot, I suppose.

Racechip is a piggyback, so AMR was correct in saying it's less safer than a traditional ECU tune.

I just installed the RaceChip RS with Bluetooth in my new E450 Coupe. It made a noticeable difference in acceleration and torque. The race mode is almost too fast. Would recommend.

ECU reprogramming

I live in Middle GA and was extremely lucky and made a short drive to Atlanta area hand ham mine done...wow and well worth it.. Check out Pressertech in Smyrna GA .

I was looking into that too, but what i wonder is that:

1st, Does it void the warranty since your car is brand new-ish?
I have a 2019 E450 coupe and was thinking about the racechip RS also, but GTS version offers 2 year warranty on engine parts which RS version did not.
So does it mean RS could possibly do damages to the engine ? and would MB warranty cover ? i mean you can uninstall but would they find out ?

2nd, Since you oped for Bluetooth adjustment app, does it mess up the center console model selector on your E450 ? does the car gets confuse?
I wonder when i start the car, its on C which is comfort mode, and lets say you set racechip to Race mode, but your car still in confort mode, does in contradict the setting ?
What happen when you set the car mode so sport+ on top of racechip set to race mode ?

My point is that you have setting on racechip at the same time the car itself also have a mode selector, what do you do when you are setting up modes?
Do you stop using center console mode selector and only use racechip selector on bluetooth ? or you still use car mode selector together ?

just want to understand how two mode selector work together on setting different mode.

I was looking into that too, but what i wonder is that:

ECU tuning on turbo charged cars can cause problems if not done correctly. I had a twin turbo 6 cylinder BMW and went with a Dinan tune because it came with a warranty which mirrored the OEM 4 yrs/50k miles, including consequential damages. Power rating jumped from 300hp/300ftlbs to 380/420. Consequential damages includes transmission, differential drives, etc due to the increased loads. The tune can’t exceed the capability of the cooling systems, or drivetrain. It also needs to pass emissions testing.

Use a reputable tuner like Rennetch, Kleemann and Weistech just to name a few. I do not trust anyone saying $499 for 100 bhp. No way. Stick to what has been around for years and trusted. There are plenty

Rennetch tuned my CL600 and Kleemann tuned my CLK350 & CLK55. Very happy. You want tuners who know what they are doing and not just looking to make power.

Renntech is waaay overpriced - $2240 vs $1195 at lets say OE Tuning. Plus I believe they give you a discount if you mention that you found out about them from here. I had experience with OE Tuning back in may 2017 - same full ECU flash. I sent them the ECU from my 2016 a207. Received it back in around 5 days. Installed and wow it felt so much more sporty! if I floored gas it gave a really sharp kick in the back! Before it was way more smooth. They stated an increase up to 407 hp on 93 aki petrol. I did not verify the power with dyno test, my bad.

OE is great as well. They did a tune for a friends E Class years back.

For my 2018 E400 I just installed the Renntech Stage 1 ECU Chip tune and blow off valve. The sound and power I got were amazing. It's pricey but worth it in my opinion..
