E400 COUPE SQUEAKS & CREAKS RATTLES

First post here so go easy on me. I purchased a CPO 2018 E400 4Matic coupe with 12,363 miles. I LOVE THE LOOK of this car and the interior is beautiful. But after driving a little over 1300 miles I notice the doors make soooo much squeaking and creaking noises it driving me crazy. with the softest touch it sounds like you are eating chips and I have this weird rattling noise coming from the rear interior roof. I took it to the dealership and drove one of the service guys around to confirm it and they took it in for service . Ive test drove other e class and have a 2020 GLE loaner vehicle and none of this is present. AT 34 this my first Mercedes purchase and as I said I love the the look and how the car drives but hopefully the can resolve this because this is not acceptable for $79,000 luxury vehicle

Welcome.

Do you have a pano roof? Many have complained about a squeaking roof from that.
You might post in the W213 forum and see what their thoughts are regarding the squeaks ... https://mbworld.org/forums/e-class-w213-208/

Hi @Atilio and welcome to MBWorld. Sorry to hear about the rattles. Hopefully the dealer can provide a solution soon. The E-Class coupe is a beautiful M-B. Please post a photo when you get a chance

I just purchased a CPO E400 as well -- should be delivered in a few days.

Some reviews on YouTube have mentioned similar creaking, which is surprising given how MB markets themselves upmarket. But I found this to be true while test driving some E400s as well. Two rattled so bad I didn't even consider them, despite being better optioned, at a more convenient dealer, and in colors that I prefer over the one I bought. So unfortunately it seems to be a thing, but let us know if you find a solution! This is the biggest fear I have with mine.

Had a 2018 E coupe convertible for 8 months before MB repurchased it. During the time we had it, the driver's door panel and rear window trim pieces had recurring squeaking noises especially along the door pull handle which has lots of sway. Occasionally, I would just tap it slightly and the noise would subside. The service advisor did not recommend removing the panels since there would be no guarantee that the issue would be resolved. Our 2019 CLS450 has similar squeaky noises coming out of the driver's side upper door panel section. I insert a small plastic tool that I acquired while working at MB, and run it along the trim line with the glass door. This seems to alleviate the issue. Sadly, cars now a days have lots of plastic trim pieces that contribute to noise - regardless of price. Its annoying but the options available sometime are worse. It is hit and miss. Good luck with your issues.

My E400C also has developed several rattles. Sunroof, Dash, steering column and rear deck. I've had the car since new. I have one year of original warranty left and will be booking an appointment this month to address along with my A service. Note, rattles/squeaks are generally only addressed under the original warranty, not CPO.

Yes I have a pano.. but the noise is coming from 2 places in the rear. The first noise I noticed came from the rear passenger seat belt, I believed it’s the bearing where you pull the belt. The second noise is coming from the rear roof area I think it’s the rear roof light

Here’s the first resolution.. I still hear the rattling noise

And here’s the second remedy.. Notice how they say “noise is no longer present at this time” now I will admit the noise on the driver door is better but it’s definitely still present. Now the passenger door sounds like the did nothing and to top it off I noticed that they damaged my driver door leather

I’ve taken my 2020 E450 Coupe in 5 times so far for rattles and creaks. This is the noisiest car I’ve ever owned! Mine also sounds like a bag of chips when pressing on pretty much any trim piece.

They’ve replaced the right rear seatbelt assembly for creaking during acceleration/decelerating. The sunglasses holder assembly for rattles. They’ve put felt tape literally everywhere, pulled panels, taped things down. A clip came out of the headliner in the rear of the car, they replaced that. Now there is a rattle coming from the pano sunroof area, it’s alleviated by putting the sunroof in vent mode. Time to go back to the dealer yet again.

I don’t think I’ll be buying another Mercedes as this is totally unacceptable for a $80k vehicle.

Wow everything you mentioned I’m dealing with the same tomorrow I’m going back in to tell them I think my roof needs to be re-pad.. and that there’s noise near the rear roof interior light 💡... also my taillights are not illuminating the fade sequence on and off.. this is ridiculous

I agree it’s ridiculous. I think I need a new headliner too. When I press on it it makes a creaking/sticky sound, like the adhesive is coming apart.

As for the taillight illumination sequence; that only comes with the advanced headlight/lighting option. My salesperson told me my car had it but I never checked before I bought....come to find out it doesn’t. Not happy. Made them install the logo projectors to make up for it.

Don’t take it home till you have the shop foreman do a test drive with you post repair. They all know me by name at my dealer. It’s embarrassing LOL .

I have the premium 3 package so my eclass should have the fade sequence on/off.. my headliner near the middle is where I hear the creaking and rattling sound. For 79k is beyond ridiculous

If you do have the Intelligent Lighting package, then there is a box you have to check in settings to enable the tail light sequence. When I had my COMAND software updated it reverted to off, but I was able to toggle it back on.

yes it’s included in the premium 3 package. I don’t see where I have the option to check the taillight

The setting may be in either the Dealer menu or Workshop menu. My car is in for service for A service and to address the rattles and have a 2021 w/MBUX loaner so can't check myself at the moment. If you have issues accessing these try searching the W213 forum for specifics.

Dealer menu:
Home, highlight but do not click on System. Press and hold the scroll wheel for 10 seconds

Workshop menu:1 Close engine hood, doors and trunk lid or liftgate.

2 Switch electronic ignition lock control unit to position "1". There may be no fault messages in the multifunction display.

3 Use swipe movements on the finger navigation pad to select the "Trip" menu item.

4 Use swipe movements on the finger navigation pad in the "Trip" menu to select the standard "Total distance" display.

5 Press and hold the "Back" button for 1.5 s and press on the finger navigation pad.
The workshop menu with the following tabs is shown:
"Vehicle data",
"Dynamometer test",
"Lining change mode",
"ASSYST PLUS",
"Head-up-display" if installed

6 Press Back" button again until the workshop entry menu is shown.

7 Use swipe movements on the finger navigation pad to select and confirm the "Trip" menu item.

8 Switch electronic ignition lock control unit to position "0".

Try the same steps but highlight Vehicle instead of System, press and hold scroll wheel for 10 seconds. If that fails, search in the 213 section as steps may have changed.

That’s what I did after I tried the system highlight.. but this is what showed up.. since I didn’t see the other steps listed as options I figured I was doing something wrong so I exited out. Here’s the selection that are listed. Thanks again.. oh and how do I get to the213 forum section if you cannot help with the listed options

Doesn't look like Dealer menu is the right one then. The Workshop menu steps provided are separate and actuated using the buttons on the left side of the steering wheel and interacts with the gauge cluster display. To get to the W213 section, go to Forums, Sedans, E-Class (W213). W213 is the sedan version of our car, both share the same platform.

The best option is probably to PM member @konigstiger He has a wealth of knowledge and has always been very helpful on the forums.

I had a 2018 E400 for only 3 weeks and traded it off for a new one (2020) this weekend. The 2018 had exactly the same squeaks and rattles in the same areas as everyone here has mentioned. Now after reading this thread, I expect it to happen again. I wonder if airbag components are contributing to this problem? Wires to and fro to the units need to be better clamped into place and perhaps some type of expandable foam needs to be injected in and around these components at the factory to prevent random movements.
I remember. back in the day, old Benzes of the 60s, 70s , and 80s always had some creaky sounds but it didn't bother me too much. I just considered it as the car's soul was telling me its story.

I also have a 2018 E400 which I took in for interior creaking in the rear area, was driving me nuts. Took it in once, it was "fixed" for about an hour. Took it in again left it with them for over 4 weeks... with loaner of course and got it back and it was ok for a few days, probably 90% reduction. Then noises came back! Decided to take things into my own hands and ordered a tube of silicon rubber lubricant for $9 and greased the sunroof seals. All squeaking/creaking gone!!! Please try this if you havent done it.

I don't have a creaking noise but would be interested if you could post a picture of what you greased? Thanks.
