Winter Driving Advice needed

I bought my 240D at the end of winter and have no experience driving on snow or ice. I was wondering how these cars drive in winter conditions. I also want to know if anyone has used a lower radiator hose type block heater. Any cold weather advice would be appreciated.

I have no real advice for the car, but once winter hits find yourself a nice open parking lot or something and get to know how the car handles in normal driving and at the limits on snow. Make sure you're 100% familiar with the lot before it snows to check on the conditions. You don't want to be testing and run into parking blocks or light poles.

I had a 300CD and it was a really good winter car. The weight + lack of torque/power from the diesel engine meant it was very easy to drive with the proper tires.

Proper tires--meaning snow tires--is the key. Otherwise it could very easily be a nightmare.

I have a new set of all weather tires. I was planning on adding about 100 pounds or so to the trunk. Anybody use a radiator hose type block heater?

I do not know where you live but in Toronto we do the following:

If possible park your car indoors. Install and use a block heater.
Buy good winter tires, not all weathers.
Keep the diesel tank quite full and use a quality additive.
Slow down and stay home during a snow storm.
