all w124 audioheads...help appreciated

to all the audio heads up in here, question. i have the 95 e320 special edition that came with the becker (or maybe alpine) cassette deck and the 6 speakers (2 dash, 2 front door, 2 rear deck). im going to install an aftermarket alpine headunit plus a class-d sub amp to drive my two perfect 12s. i've been told that due to the differing impedences and the fact that the 95's had factory amps in the trunk, that i'll need to change all my interior speakers as well when i swith to an aftermarket headunit. is this true? looking to just add the subs and cleaner headunit now and not really looking to drop more $$$ on interiors just yet. can i run the stock speakers, stock amps, stock wiring on an aftermarket unit? thanks.

I did the same thing to my 95 E320, all they did was rewire the amp with the power and ran new wires to the inside speakers. Basically the factory amp is siting there not getting powered by the headunit. But your installer will have to bypass some wires i think for the power antana and whatnot from what i was told.

Yes you can run the stock amp with a aftermarket headunit, they just need to do more checking before they splice into the facorty wiring harness.

I just did the same thing. Crutchfield had a factory harness adaptor for my Kenwood head and I used a MTX Box with a MTX Class d amp. I used the factory speakers in front and rear and it sounds awesome. I do not know the specs on the factory amp but the system was cheap and its loud and sounds clear at any volume.

yes you can use the current speakers, although they run at 6 ohm impedance vs 4 for most normal appliactions (or the other way round!!!) sound wont be great but as long as you keep volumes low you probably wont be able to tell.

you will need to change the speakers eventually, happened to me. get good ones.

if youre not going to replace the door speakers, leave em connected to the amp thats already in place. they can then give you some mid bass fill.

Size of door speakers?

While we are on the subject, I was hoping someone could help me with the size of the door speakers on the 93 E320 4 door? I know some threads on the subject say 6 1/2 components will fit in the door. However, some of the internet resources say only a 5 1/4 can fit. I've looked at other discussion boards and have become even more confused. Could someone offer any advice?

6 1/2

Great! How much modifications were required? I'm out in Hawaii and would hate to order something via e-tailer and have to send it back cause
it didn't fit.

My speakers in the rear are stamped 2 Ohm. Are they using a series wiring trick or is a 95 diffrent? I have a set of Fosgate componets for the rear and have not used them for this reason. They are 4 Ohm. I was thinkging they were running the amp @ 2 for the added power.
