new wheels.. new problem.. pics
hey all,
it's been a while since i last posted pics of my ride. anyway, got hooked up with some 2nd hand W210 wheels in immaculate conditions so went for it..
the wheels are 17" with what i believe to be the correct offset. i've got some bridgestone G3s on them (yeh i know bridgestones suck) and the size is 215/45/17 all around..
after installation i will impressed with the stretched look of the tire but, i've started to get some rubbing issues at the front when cornering hard...
i am aware that my shocks are on the way out but even if that's the case, i suppose it should not rub.. anyone know what the problem is?
i've posted pics of the car standing, and also a pic of the car cornering hard when i was doing some AutoCross..
the banner on my trunk is the banner of "mercedes benz group of hong kong" just incase any of you are wondering

You are looking good
Don't feel too bad. I get just the slightest rub during hard cornering and I only have 205/55/16 tires mounted on my 16" x 7.5" ET37 AMG wheels. Right now I have Bridgestone Turanza LSH tires and my Michelin MXV4 tires didn't rub, even though they were the same size. I think I prefer the Bridgestone tires to the Michelins, since they are much better in the rain and they don't squeal all the time, but I think there may be something about the Bridgestone tires that makes them rub. They have that protective rubber bulge that protrudes slightly from the sidewall, so maybe the profile of the tire is slightly wider than some other brands. I don't know how some guys manage to run the 225 tires. It just seems impossible, unless they are rolling their fenders and using the AMG fender spacers. I guess every car is a little different, but it still seems impossible. Even with the "perfect offset" of ET42, which would give me 5mm more clearance at the fender, there is not much chance I could fit the wider 225, which would be 10mm wider on both sides. For me, with the 16" size, the 215/55/16 is taller than the recommended 205/55/16 and the 225/50/16 would just be too wide, even though it would be the same diameter as the 205/55/16.
Your car looks great, even if does have a little rub. It isn't an M3, so maybe you can resist the temptation to do any crazy cornering and just enjoy cruising in your beautiful luxury sedan.
This is mine

Enzo, my Benzo
You must have a very wrong offset, your car is not low enough for it to rub if the offset is correct. I run 215 45 17 on 17x7.5" AMG mono II's ET 35 for the winter and I have NO issues. I don't even rub with my 18x8's and my car is pretty much as low as a W124 can be.
W210 is a different offset IIRC.

My guess are 1. Wrong offset 2. Shocks are worn out
215/45/17 all around - this should be fine (wrong offset?)
Looking at your pictures the car isn't lowered...or lowered VERY SLIGHTLY (worn shocks?)

thanks for all replies..
AFAIK, the offset of the wheels are either spot on or just very slightly off.. i was nagging my friend about the offset (he owns a wheels shop) and he assured me that the offset would be OK...
secondly, i agree with the worn shocks idea. my front shocks are worn and i know it (just waiting for a time to change them). however, i wonder how people with lowered 124 will get around the rubbing issue then?
cheers,
jeff

i say get those struts replaced. also to check the offset pull the rim and look for a 2 digit # on the back. it should be 35.

for a w124 with 7.5" wheels offsets that will work would be 37 - 30 mm 30 mm is pushing it as it is more agressive. Though I did not having rubbing with 17x7.5 with an offset of 30 with 225/45/17 rubber.
In an 8" wide Wheel, the offset is more critical
What is the offset on your rims, I have seen several w124's with those rims.

I had those same exact rims but on 235's . I believe the offset was 37
no rubbing issues at all, I think alot of your probs have to do with worn shocks/springs

agrees totally with the worn shocks and springs suggestion... so, the conclusion is to get new shocks and springs (preferably stiffer ones?)..
also, which bushing are we talking about here?
cheers

thanks for the replies..
maybe i should do the shocks, springs, sway bars as well as the sway bar bushings while i'm at it...
are the wishbones a common fault for the W124? if so, i might consider replacing them too..

Yes, he sold the E320 at $50000......why don't ask me

Why didn't he ask me too!!
I mean, I can buy the W210 and then sell it...
I would make enough money to modify my suspension, etc etc etc and probably upgrading to 18" too

i had the same problem on my 210 but with 20's. It was the control arm that the wheels would rub against while cornering as well as backing up. Are you getting a rub while backing up? It sounds to me like it is probably more the wheels and not something going bad.

thanks for the reply mate,
i felt the front fenders where the tires would rub and yes the paint had been rubbed off (and i'm sure they weren't previously)..
anyway, i don't get rubs when i back up... what are the control arms anyway?
cheers,
jeff

I think they are just sway bars renamed. I wish i had a pic here at work to show you what the control arm is. I dont know if they are even on the 124, its been a long time since i had my 300e.

after installation i will impressed with the stretched look of the tire but, i've started to get some rubbing issues at the front when cornering hard...
i am aware that my shocks are on the way out but even if that's the case, i suppose it should not rub.. anyone know what the problem is?
i've posted pics of the car standing, and also a pic of the car cornering hard when i was doing some AutoCross..
the banner on my trunk is the banner of "mercedes benz group of hong kong" just incase any of you are wondering

The question is, where is it rubbing? If you have offset problems, you will know right away coz once you install the front wheels and turn it while it is still jacked up, if it is rubbing the strut, you will have a hard time turning it or wont be able to turn it at all. The strut noves with the wheel in an up and down motion. Even in hard turns the tire should not rub the strut. This will only happen if you have very ba wheel bearing that can cause movement.
