Is this US legal?? Mercedes 3.4 AMG Coupe

Need some info. Is a 1992 Mercedes 3.4 AMG coupe from Europe US legal? What modification do I have to do for DOT and EPA? I want to calculate the cost before I import the car.

Thanks for the info.

I am not sure if it would be. as far as emissions standars are concerned I would say probably not. as far as safety standards, it is hard to tell.

Sounds like a good find.

I would try locatiing a vehicle importer/conversion place to find out.

If the car has a USA Certification sticker on the engine you should be good to go with the EPA. If the engine in the car doesn't have taht USA Certification label? FORGET IT! My guess is that the cost of conversion would be at least $20,000 USD. If you want to check, you can try calling J&K Conversions in New Jersey, and G&K Conversions in California. I would link you to the EPA site where you might be able to look up the car - but suffice it to say, in your case, "No Stickey, No Importy".

For DOT, something as obvious as having the turn signal indicators moved from the fenders to the front bumper is going to cost you money.... In the rears it is usually just changing out lenses or bulbs. This work here could cost as little as a few thousand dollars on this car. Even on something like an SLR the cost for this is under $10,000 USD. The car should also have to meet: Airbags (maybe not with a '92), seatbelts, door locks, safety glass, and alram system (should meet all of these, I'd think).

Without knowing the car, I'd say have someone look for that US sticker on the engine; if it's there, you can probably bring the car in for less than $10,000 USD total....

Here are the links to EPA and DOT anyway:

Youngtimer
from one of those links:

"Thanks,
I suspected it was a legitimate AMG 3.4 engined coupe, however the body shell has now been destroyed (as required by the government regulations) and the mechanical components have been transplanted into a 1991 Australia delivered 300CE, so in a way it lives again. I still cannot believe our government would feel so threatened by a single semi legitimately imported Mercedes Benz that they have resorted to destroying the body shell to prevent it from being driven on our "oh so precious" roads. We have amongst the most pre-historic and out of date with the population road rules in the world, very similar to England where everytime you get in your car you get fined for something. Maximum speed limits on 99% of our roads is 100Km/h or 62 MPH, going over this even by 3Km/h or 2 MPH gets you a $165 fine and 1 demerit point off your licence. When you get to 12 points it's back to the bicycle for 3 months. I could go on forever but i'll probably go live in Germany and have some peace of mind when driving."

lots of cars
Welll basically you need to DOT the whole car. So if you wanna change headlights, ALLL windows, bumpers and whatever the BAR wants. You will have to get the car inspected and have all smog equipment installed. Also It will need to get inspected by the BAR and have all stickers that are required. SOO i did this on a grey market 230E from canada the vin started with W124DBA. Im selling a 190E 2.3 16V grey market car and all this was done to it too.

Mercedes-Benz 3.4AMG Orignal Coupe

I was planning to import this car:

http://www.mobile.de/SIDff0nppNFcvr1...1111193135234&

It has 160KM = 100k miles and price EUR 4,900 = approximately USD 6,000. Very good price if it is real.

The timing is not right for me to deal with the conversion. If anybody does import this car in, please give me details.

Regards,
Ed
