88 300ce wont start!

Hey,

I got an 88 300 CE that recently has been running rough when cold, and now wont start. It has good spark to the plugs, but they are soaked with fuel. I removed the plugs, let the combustion chambers air out over night, reinstalled them the next day, and cranked for 5 seconds, no start. I checked the plugs again, SOAKED in fuel again.

I have no experience with mechanical fuel injection but have my suspicions on the cold start injector from what ive read about the "K" and "KE" fuel systems.

ANY help will be apreciated, Thanks

If you have spark... try changing out the fuel pump relay.

How exactly does the fuel pump relay actually work?

From similar experience, change your cap and rotor and it will start. You may have spark but you really dont. It has happened to me and this solved my problem. It was also running badly and changing it made night and days difference.

Cap, Rotor, plugs, and wires are all recent. Within the last 6 months. I will take it out and inspect it, but if there was a problem I dont think there would be a bright blue spark.

Not very technical?

This forum isnt very technical... If i was putting rims on, or painting my grill I would have had 10x the replies. Hmmm, whats the German equivalent of a ricer?

Anyway, I found the problem

With K and KE injection, the injectors are always pumping fuel. The cold start injector only pumps fuel when the engine is cold (I know, it's pretty obvious). With no spark you would definitely soak your plugs over and over again.

There is an awesome book on Bosch fuel injection systems that covers the kind you have. It was definitely a must-have when I had a VW with K Jetronic.

I've got a couple thousand posts on Mercedesshop.com under a different name and joined here a few days ago to check it out. You've got it right. Nothing but a bunch of kids on this site which will bore me to death in a short while. I just saw another post where a guys seats don't work and his windows don't go up and down. He wants to spend his money on mods instead of correcting the problem. I don't mind helping people who are interested in learning about their cars and getting satisfaction from doing it themselves, but I won't waste my time offering advise so someone who has no interest in the mechanics of the car, can save money to buy some dumb sound system.

By the way you said you found the problem, but you failed to share the info. You got your problem solved, but don't have the time to share the info.
