Exclamation Transmission question

I have a 1993 300E 2.8 and whenever I brake harder than just a gradual stop, the trans seems to thud into gear. If I hit the brakes and then give it gas again before the thud happens, it's like the trans isn't in gear and the car shakes and makes all of this horrible noise before finally shifting into gear (with a loud thud) and accelerating. I don't know if this is a trans or diff problem, but the thud and the other noises associated with this all come from the rear end of the car.

The trans has no other difficulties. Other than this, it shifts smooth and wonderful.

Any thoughts?

Sounds like the differential..get it up on the rack and check it...plus look at the trans while you have it up...

Interesting... I have the same issue with my E420. At the end of a hard brake I get this uncomfortable thud.

Sounds to me like you have a Bad FLEX DISK(S)...Look it up.

I would STRONGLY advise to all of you not to downshift too much until you get either of them fixed (there are 2, one front one rear)...keep the foot on the gas pedal and let the tranny do it's thing without much kickdown, this will prolong the life of the disks.

These things can become VERY dangerous if not taken care of...

I did a search on this, but it would only seem to explain the thud, not the problem where it seems like it's not in gear all the way. Do you think it could be the flex discs + something else?

Yes, apparantly the front flex disc sits just below the airbag ECU and if it flies apart it can hit it and set off your airbags (time for a new dash board)

You could also be suffering from a bad torque converter.

Does anyone have any info on how to diagnose this problem? I don't want to just start throwing parts at it.

I hear you.

I'd advise you to just take it to a mercedes shop if you're really serious about it!

does anyone know what the diff gear ratio is on a 2.8 300E? I saw one on ebay with a 3.07 ratio.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=300027037346

I know you can tweak your torque with different final drive ratios, does anyone know a good ratio and what model used it?
