New project for Enzo the Benzo

So today I purchased chrome fender flares that flare out an extra inch approximately. Now, you say: ewwwwww wtf is he thinking??!!! Well, I AM thinking I will be painting them body color this weekend and then 3M taping them to the car for final results before more permanently attaching them to the fenders. Stay tuned for pics this afternoon....a seemingly ghetto 500E style mod could turn out to be just what the doctor ordered, and all for under $300 CAD! These trim pieces are real metal, not plastic chromed, so finish should be quite durable

This shows how much of a fender extension:

Step 1: Sand with 350 grit sand paper to scuff up the chrome to promote adhesion

Step 2: Wipe all sanded parts down with a tack cloth

Step 3: Prime with black metal primer.

Step 4: Sand primed pieces with 350 grit again

Step 5: Paint with 199 Pearl Black Metallic spray bomb

Step 6: Lightly sand if neccessary and add another coat, let dry for 4 hrs

Step 7: Clear coat application

Step 8: Clean underside of flares and fenders to prep for application of mounting tape

Step 9: Mount fenders

Step 10: Roll hard.

That should look great! Are you planning on doing this in a way that would give more clearance for a wider tire, or just for the look of flares?

Yeah, I saw the one you posted, I've been wanting to do this for a couple years, just never got around to it.

mgw, I am doing it initially for aesthetics, if it works and looks good enough, I'll roll the actual fenders like crazy for clearance, slap on wider tires and spacers! Booyah!

Initial pics are up!

Sounds like a cool project. Do you have pics of the chrome flares? I'm having trouble picturing how they attach.

Keep us updated, and take pics!!

Edit: wtf? You must've just added those pics while I was posting. Lol, disregard this post.

I will show more detailed pics of the flares and how they attach once they're sanded.

Just thought of a question. is it really this easy to paint over chrome (i.e. scuff-sanding)? I always assumed you had to take it down to bare metal. But I've never painted over chrome before.

And out of curiosity, what's your reasoning behind sanding down the primer? Does that just make the paint adhere more easily? I'm a noob when it comes to body work.

It's because the primer, just like the paint, won't always go on perfectly...bodyshops sand between coats too...as far as the chrome, sanding it down has brought it to a rough stainless, it's not high-quality or thick chrome plating like our grille surrounds. Here's a comparison shot between the sanded and unsanded

Do you plan on blending the fender trims into the fender with fibreglass or anything? How is this going to work? Just straight up bolt/tape on ?

Yup, bolt on action...I saw an E46 3 series with similar non-blended flares and it looked good....we'll have to see

Here they are, cleared, 4 coats, drying...gonna let them sit for 4 hrs before handling. Turned out fantastic, considering this was done by spray bomb in my dirty garage haha

Here you can make out the finish and virtual lack of orange peel, great considering it was a rattle can...

Next step, clean the underside and MOUNT UP!!!!!

Stay Tuned..

I was going to post yesterday but decided to wait so I can upload you some pictures of what some guys in Japan did with those fender flares. Looks sick!

Looks dope thus far man - Really can't wait to see it on the car in ... 3 hours. haha

By the way - how's the 997 coming along?

Nice! That's what they should look like....not bad

The 997 is bone stock and will remain as such..I may be giving it back as I am moving to Vancouver to pursue my acting...starving actors driving 997's look bad

That will look really smooth with body color... I am thinking I might do this with the grey color of my bumpers/wheels.. what do you think? I like the look on my dad's allroad, but those flares are a bit bigger...

I love Canada, and Vancouver is great. Especially Blunt Brothers Cafe/New Ampsterdam Cafe.
