Little update on the new suspension parts installed today...

Earlier today I installed my 500E front and rear sway bars.

Also installed the Wiechers front strut bar.

In my opinion, the car handles absolutely amazing now. I feel the difference and it definitely stiffened a lot. Corners way better than before. You know me - get something installed and F$*k around in the car to feel the difference. LOL

Anyways, here are some pictures.

Front 500E Sway Bar

Front & Rear 500E Sway Bars

Rear 500E Sway Bar & 400E Rear Sway Bar (bottom)

Thickness comparison if you can even notice it

Rear 500E installed

Front 500E Sway Top & 400E bottom

Comparision

Wiechers Sport Front Strut Bar

Misc Photos of my friends cars...

Cleanest 2.3-16V you'll ever see

Notice the custom adjustable camber plates

Buddies clean BBS kitted and BBS wheel 300E

The cleanest and sickest 500E you'll ever see! Also has custom adjustable camber plates

So now basically...

I have the front and rear E420 sway bars for sale. Front 26MM and rear 16MM. Let me know if any of you are interested. Be great for you 300E guys.

Performance is a hard issue. There aren't any standardized kits or common modifications (I haven't heard of anyone reboring the 4.2 liter m119). A low restriction exhaust seems like the only way to go.

(Although I'm in the process of installing a 2.82 differential, should take 1.2 seconds off the 0-60.)

Thanks for the Pictures Chris I have a super curvy commute and the body roll gets pretty bad. Install is set for the beginning of next week. I can't wait.

Do you have source for those limo bars? I'd be interested to see how much they cost. Do they require any modification at all?

And Chris, here are some questions for you!

1. Did you think about the limo bars? Why did you decide to go with the 500e's instead?

2. Do you think that the Wiechers Strut Bar made the most difference? In other words, did you take the car out for a test drive between installing the sway bars and the strut bar? Where did you notice the biggest improvements?

Looking good man. You're might hate me for saying this, but I think I like your new car better than your old one!

Way to go Chris! Those are the same bars I put on BigBlue ! and yes i felt the difference in the first corner I went through! I have lots of twisty roads up here in the Mtns. and I give them a good workout!! BigPete check with Rusty I believe that is where I got my bars! They were OEM 500E bars. Think the limo bars are little hard to find! BTW: I knew you would like that E420!

As far as the m119 engine is concerned, i have read on this forum or another that you can really boost performance by modifying the intake manifold... I will research and post later today.

At the moment I do not have a source for the limo bars. They shouldn't be all too different from the 500E Sway bars.

1. The limo bars are not that much of a difference to be honest - - I believe they are about .5-1MM thicker than the 500E's. Got a good deal on the 500E's which is why I went that route. Thinking about replacing the rear already to a even thicker sway bar.

2. To be honest - I didn't get a chance to drive the car without the strut bar after I got the 500E bars installed. However, there are BIG improvements with the handling of the car. The car corners so much better now - I tested it again on the way to work and it simply added a smile to my face.

I hate to say it as well - I like my new car better too!

You can also add vents into the wiper panels to allow more air flow but as far as modifying the intake manifold ... havent heard of that one.

The Limo bar was designed for the straight six and will not fit V8 models. It lacks the crook you see in the 500 bars shown above.

You do the math...

Front 500E - 28MM
Rear 500E - 18MM

The sway bars on the 300E and 300CE are dinky.

the way the 500E bars are bent for the car.

Anyways, I'm open to offers for the E420 bars. Let me know if anyone is interested.

Thanks man! Haven't seen you and the crew for awhile. Need to start planning some big meets!

That wasn't a shop by the way - it was my friends office down in Lake Forest.

So here's a question about the sway bars:

I know one of the main ways to add stiffness is to go with thicker sway bars. Pretty straight-forward.

But when you start to add large curves (or "crooks") to the sway bar, I would imagine that it would cause it to flex more. kind of like a bow and arrow. I have not seen a 300e bar next to a 500e bar, but just thinking about it, I would assume that some of the added thickness of the 500e bar would be counteracted by this bow effect I'm talking about.

In other words, wouldn't it make more sense for us 300 guys to go with the limo bar since it's not only thicker than stock, it's more straight?

This is just a random thought, so I'm not sure if it holds up. Discuss. And if anybody can find a pic of a stock 300e bar, that would be helpful... so that we can compare the shape. I looked through lots of the parts websites and none of them seem to sell the sway bar itself...

No, because the ends of the bar are not moving towards each other. With a bow, the string pulls the two ends toward each other. An anti sway bar resists the deflection of one wheel separate from the other. Thickness is everything.
