Cool vid but a 98 Impreza Turbo would eat 300E for breakfast in every department (except style & quality).

I suspect that race simply came down to whoever had the biggest ***** at high speeds.

Check your specs on the Subaru. If the 300E was chipped it should beat the Impreza turbo at ALL speeds, especially when you factor in the lack of turbo lag.

http://www.edmunds.com/used/1998/sub...292/specs.html

The 300E with a chip IS a beast. Check out this video (remember to divide KM by 1.6 to get MPH). Check out that scratch going into second. 0-60 in about 7 seconds. This thing flies!

Thanks for that Doug,,, but the 300E wasn't chipped according to the video,,,, and the stats you provided were for the 1998 US Spec, non-turbo version of the Impreza. The Impreza in the video is a Turbo.

The 98 Impreza Turbo could do 0-60 in less than 6 seconds EASY and had a top speed of 150mph in most markets.

Even if you put a twin turbo on a 300E it would be hard pressed to keep up with an Impreza Turbo.

I don't think the Subaru was born for the Autobahn. I guess I'll just have to race one and find out. According to Edmunds.com, Subaru didn't make a turbocharged Impreza in 1998. Someone must have added the turbo. Maybe they didn't do it right. Also, keep in mind that the Subaru is electronically limited to about 118 MPH and the Merc will do at least 130 before the governor kicks in. AND, if the Merc owner went to the trouble of adding aftermarket intake, exhaust, and springs one can assume he chipped it as well. It would be crazy not to when it adds around 40+ horsepower.

C'mon Doug,,, I love 124's as much as the next 124 loony but the WRX is on a different planet where performance is concerned. Chipping a 300E might alter the torque-curve but it won't add much in the way of HP as I understand it.

There was no Impreza turbo in the US in 1998 but most of the rest of the world got them,, including Chile where it appears that video was taken.

None of the early Impreza Turbo's were electronically limited as far as I know and their ability to exceed 150mph with revs to spare is well documented. Having driven one, I can attest they handle like a go-kart as well.

Fast and fun,,, but I'd take the 124 over it anyday.

yeah something else must've been done to the 300E. For sure. The WRX is absolutely quicker. No contest. I totally agree with you Juck. Just because he added intake, exhaust, and doesn't mean he chipped it as well.

okay. correct me if im wrong here, but i dont think there is a chip available for the 300e that makes a 40hp gain. if there is one please tell me who to write the check out to.

Well, tell jayrasheed at youtube about it. He says "My Merc has an upgraded ECU and puts out around 212 bhp. by the way it is an M103 3.0 engine with 12 valves." Maybe that doesn't mean a chip, but whatever it is it runs like a scalded dog! Jay's does 0-60 in about the same time as my E320 with 217 hp so it seems reasonable. Even the WRX only makes 209 ft lbs of torque and that's not until the rubber band gets wound up to 4000 rpm! What a slug! I can't even floor my Merc off the line cause it just sits there and smokes the tires. OK, maybe the Subaru isn't a slug but what's the point? If you're going to go fast you may as well do it with style.

Rubbish.

Floaty? lol. A WRX handles almost as tight as a C5, and would kill a 500E on the track, strip or highway. So, either your "friend's" WRX was busted, or you don't know what you're talking about. Hmmm,, that's a toughie.

Learn something about Rallying around the world in the past 10 years,,,,, then come back here and explain to us all how the WRX is 'pretty weak'. rofl

A 500E with one spark plug disconnected and a flat tire would still eat a WRX alive! The 500E is just silly fast and has a better power to weight ratio than the WRX by far. I think it's about 315 horsepower and only weighs about 3700 lbs. Simple physics. An Ex-coworker of mine has a WRX. It's kinda quick but the 500E, well... 'nuff said. Let me know when the race is on. I want to watch! BTW, do you think the guy driving the Sube in the video was holding back? Maybe he just didn't mind losing to an older, bigger, non-sports car in front of millions of internet viewers? Looks to me like he was trying his hardest, but that's just my opinion.

I will be the first to give mercedes it's praises over any car on any day, but I do think a wrx would out-hoss a w124 in many cases. On the open highway? Probably not, but there is a reason that wrx's are often rally champs. Apples and oranges.

Would I want to ride around in a tin can with a solid suspension and an engine that sounds like an audi 5000 with a plug wire disconnected and no exhaust, no. So I stick to my benz.

Doug and Garfunkle,

The pointless cheerleading is wasted on me.

The 500E is slower to 60mph and slower in the 1/4 mile. The Subaru is AWD and weighs 700lbs less than the 500E.

Not sure which universe you two live in,, but in this one, the Subaru would outrun a 500E,,, pretty much anywhere.

This isn't a personal preference thing,, these are just plain facts. They are very different cars, and the Subaru is much more suited for racing.
