Came in both flavors....depending on how fast you wanted to go and how much you had to spend.
Next month's "Mercedes Enthusiast " mag from the U.K. is doing an article..
"Hammer Blow...One man's quest to restore the original V8 AMG."
I think this may be one of the few RHD produced !!!

Similar to the W124 500E or later E500, I am sure that the Hammer never sported a right hand drive version.

What was dubbed the "Hammer" was a non production AMG built/modified vehicle, whereas the 500E and E500 was a MB/Porsche production venture

Confirmed that two RHD 'Hammer's" were produced by AMG.
One was written off years ago due to an accident, the other is owned by Martin traynor in the U.K. and will be featured in next month's Mercedes Enthusiast Magazine.
Belive it might also be up for sale !

Chappy,
The Hammer did have to different engine choices according to an article I read a while back. I think it was a 5.6 and a 6.0 but don't quote me. If I can find the article I will post it.
Both engines had the 4 valve cylinder heads. I think the larger engine put out about 365 hp/??? torque. In 1985 or 1986 it did 188 mph on the Autobahn and was supposed to be the fastest sedan out there at the time.
Take Care

I'm quoting from the original AMG of North America sales brochure:
"The Hammer begins with a U.S. specification Mercedes 300E, stripped of all powertain and running gear. The six-cylinder engine gives way to the 5.6-liter V-8 built for the larger 560s. Disassembled, ported, polished, balanced, and blueprinted - and optionally bored out to 6.0 liters - and fitted with the amazing 32-valve secret to its success: AMG-designed double overhead camshafts and four-valve-per-cylinder heads. Dual German high-performance catalytic convertors promote free exhaust flow. To handle the resulting 360 horsepower and 377 pound-feet of torque (375 horsepower and 407 pound-feet for the 6.0 litre version), AMG revalves the four-speed automatic from the large Mercedes S-Class machines."
Having said all that, the original Hammer that debuted at the 1987 Paris Auto Show was a 300E sedan with the 6.0 liter engine.

Why is that? I think the C-amg pulls waaay more HP and torque than the hammer, and probably can run circles around it. Granted, its not a w124, but bias aside, I would take a c32/c36/c43/c63 over a standard 300e/e320.

Range Rover Classic
Given the raw numbers of AMG cars these days they are getting far less special but thats the difference between a coach builder and a division at major car manufacturer. AMG cars were always very bold with at times almost abrasive style. Subtle was lost somewhere in the bottom of the trash bin.
These days subtle is the game along with the serious over performing power monster engines.

I was uncertain as to why zed was saying AMG was way cooler back then. I happen to think the current AMG projects are some of the most bad-*** and desireable cars I have seen. Case in point, CLK63 AMG Black.

the old M5's were all handmade, but the last couple of models have been mass produced, and they lose some soul. i dunno, i guess it's a matter of opinion. don't get me wrong, i would LOVE a nice new AMG, but to me the true AMG cars were the bespoke pre-AMG buyout benzos. a hand built engine is amazing, but with the sheer amount of these cars on the road, for all intents and purposes they may as well be mass produced... just my opinion!

Who Wants It?
Also, auctions suck for buying cars IMHO. Buyer's premium jacks the price up and "off the wall" bidding sucks in newbies like me. I'd rather sit down at the kitchen table with the owner and go over his records, hear his stories...

AMG was cooler back then because their cars were completely custom made for the buyer, super rare, and badder than any car you could buy for the money in that class. today you can buy an AMG in any benz dealership, and i see at least 4 or 5 a day driving around in some form or another. the first time i saw an AMG W124 about 15 years ago i almost shat my pants i was so excited, it was the meanest thing i had laid my eyes on. the amg cars of today are designed to appeal to the masses, its all about sales sales sales, and they are far from rare. yes, they are very powerful etc., and beautiful cars, but there is nothing like a real old-school amg car! i fully agree the cars of today are more powerful than the old ones, but that's inevitable, even a stock w211 has more power than a stock w124.

I have to agree with Zedstyle. The AMG cars really do nothing for me today in terms of "wow look at that" factor. They've lost their exclusivity. There is something to be said about building low numbers and making access difficult...ie aston martin and ferrari. That being said...I'd still love to have an E63.
