Impulse Counter

On these older cars an Impulse Counter is used to connect to the on-board diagnostic connector. The Mercedes Part Number is 124 589 19 21 00 Does anyone know if I can use a computer & feed the signal into the serial port? Any comments about the subject is appreciated.

Might be tricky. I know that the Star laptops were something like 30,000 bucks as a way for an interface with the cars, and the simplified readers were also quite expensive as well, they look like an obdII scanner on steroids.

What you are wanting to do would require writing software, but you could probably hire some chap in India to write a program for less than the cost of the tool from mercedes.

Realistically, it is not a remark, but in fact a true statement. Indian labor is generally cheaper than German or American labor, therefore resulting in lower cost goods and services. There is a reason why every time you call a corporate help line you are connected to India. It's not a coincidence!

Oh - come on Guys! quit the squabbling. Does anyone have a wiring diagram of the impulse counter? I can build one cheaper than anyone, but I need a wiring diagram. Can I rig an LED and count the flashes? I learned to count up to about ten in engineering school.

My brother had to build an impulse counter for his 90 300CE, if this is what you need, i'll have him send you the plans, but again, you should have a built in light.

There is a light

There is a built-in light, a red LED and a push button adjacent. But I don't understand how to use it. The manual is silent about that. It only describes the use of a pulse counter. I really could use help. Please ask your brother to contact me at pjlange@juno.com Thank you very much!

It would help if we knew which model you're referring to. I'm guessing this is the info you're looking for:

The model is the E320 Wagon, W124, 1995
It has the built-in light and a 16 pin/socket board. I do have the Diagnostic trouble code book, the A/C book and the factory CD. None of which covers the procedure to read out the code without an Impulse Counter.

Kestas: Thank you very much! That's just what I was looking for. Now it's off to Radio Shack for parts to build the counter.

Here is what I did:
1. Built an impulse counter. My car is a California version.
2. Downloaded instructions. (PDF attached)
Ordered new Mass Flow Sensor.
