I run 91 and use synthetic oil, but my buddy runs 87 and regular oil and his engine runs much smoother than mine at high rpm.

dont mean to hi-jack your thread... but JDW.. did you ever get your hands on a full size spare.... if you need one i have one.. non-bent... PM me if interested

-carino...

as far as gas.... to be honest ive switched a few times between premium 91 octane and mid grade 87 octane... in both my c320 and e320. in all honesty i have not noticed much of a difference in mpg. each tank i also add a bottle of chevron fuel additive.

i use regular and about every 3rd tank or so i use premium. i run a bottle of chevron fuel injector cleaner every few months, about every 8th tank or so.

regular oil. my car is still consuming oil. i add a quart about once a month.

carino
id say that fuel system cleaner in each tank is a little bit over kill. but to each their own.

I use 93, but I did a test and found that if I use 87, my MPG drops the same % of the cost difference between 87 & 93.

IIRC, 93 = 23.4 mpg
87 = 21.1 mpg

It changes all the time
In my 124s I use mid grade for local and flat land driving, buy use Chevron premium in the mountains or out on the super slab like between here and Vegas.

300E a couple 1994 w124wagon E320 Wagon/,1971MGB Track/Rally, MG Midget Autocross ,2000 E320 wagon.
Sure

you can upgrade anytime, the extra cost will be made up by the better mpg.If the engine calls for premium,it will run better, you might not notice it,but under load low grade fuel is probably pinging and you dont even hear it.Funny thing,my brother has one of those toyota matrix, calls for regular,he filled it with high test and picked up 3mpg!so even a low compression motor at times responds to the octane jump.won't work in all cars so no reason to waste the money unless it shows an increase. The benz, most definitly.91 or better

ohlord crowned the topic. Ping is the whole deal.

Pre-ignition, detonation, ping - same thing and very bad. Higher octane fuel has a slower burn envelope when ignited. The effect helps prevents ping or the fuel/air mix burning before the crank has advanced to the proper fire point. Premium is a must for any higher compression engine.

Basically, the low grade fuel explosion may occur early (fast burn) where downward force hammers the piston as it rises before it has reached the point in the stroke where it should go down. It makes a clattering sound usually under load like a hill or accelerating. Often mis-read as "valve noise".

Worth killing the engine? The new MINI Cooper requires premium. Posts on a fan site discuss destroying engines running cheap fuel. But they saved money.

93 from shell, and keep injector cleaner in the trunk.

honestly, its actually saving money in the long run. 10 dollars extra on gas? or have to a buy a new car in a few years...
worse then buying that new car...

knowing you ruined an old mercs engine
