Cool...I ran against one at an MBCA event six years ago. "Tobias" had a Ford V8 with a sequential shift in his 190E race car.

you can start on in first gear if you shift to the lowest gear (2 on my car I think), then shift back to drive

Stormy, if you de-jbwelded your car you'd know you can get it to start in 1st every time.

500E Signal Rot
Depending upon the year of production, your vehicle may start in 1st gear or 2nd. I know that the 1992 2.6 190e started in 1st gear by default, it may of been that way on the 90-91 but have not verified. My friends 1992 300e, starts in 1st gear by default. So I have to assume here that the later models were changed from a 2nd gear start to a 1st gear start.

All 400e/E420s start in 1st gear, all 500e/E500s' start in 2nd gear. (92-95)

My 92 TE 4-matic (3.0) will do 135 mph and its worse than stock (needs work).
Of course the 4matic won't let you break the tires loose.

Depending on a bunch of variables, you most likely don't need to look at re-Nikasiling the cylinders unless there is serious wear/gouging.

With that in mind, you should only have to replace the offending rod [or all the rods with lighter weight ones] to eliminate that issue. Your R&R time is going to be the same [about 50 hours - book] but if you rebuild you current block, you will kNOW what you have [head job, new rods, new gaskets, sending units, chain, guides, etc] whereas if you get another engine you may, or may not have to address some of the same issues.

Unless I had a catastrophic issue with the motor [crack, warp], I would rebuild what I had so I would KNOW what was in there. You will end up with a completely refreshed block/heads which should give you another 200K miles.

Sounds like you need some new tires.

My 95 E420 starts in 2nd unless I specifically kick it down prior to launch...

Back on topic, my E420 also has a CEL that is pointing to the transmission. I have been unsuccessful in finding a junk transmission, so may just swap the entire thing out for grins. Wife would probably kill me since she says no more projects (just 'finished' a Stalker)...

Any serious firewall mods to fit, say an LS1, in a W124 that already had a V8?
