Hey Guys Ive finally Convinced my dad to buy a Merc haha

He currently owns a 94 318is coupe and is Deciding on Whether to buy a W124 or a W210

Heres the Stats of both cars

W124
1993
320CE
132,850k's
5 speed auto
Convertible

W210
1997
E36 AMG
154,057k's
4 Speed auto

Both are Priced at around $35,000
My Dad has always liked my W124 but he doesn't know whether or not if he wants an older car and these are the two he is deciding on

Any Suggestions i could put forward in helping him make a decision?

That's Oz dollars, presumably. Both prices look high, although the Cab price is not far off UK prices for good examples, although generally at lower mileages (averaging Oz$36k in the MB Club magazine small ads; Oz$42k for a club concours winner).

Oz Dollars?! As in The Wizard Of? Take off a zero, I guess.

The W124 is the superior car; this issue has been well covered on this forum. Do a search. Personally, I wouldn't touch a 5 speed manual except in a riding lawn mower or a motorcycle. Too hard to re-sell, not just anyone can drive your car if the situation calls for it, bad on the knees to drive, constantly surging through the gears in traffic, 100-year-old technology, just not my thing.

The spring perch issue of the W210 is enough to keep me away from those. Imagine your car being fine one minute and dead on a flatbed the next with no means of repair (too much liability) and no insurance payout.

why would you just not google 'currency conversion'?!?

anyways, it's about 31 grand US. it's not as bad as it sounds, since the dollar has dropped like a stone recently (it was weaker than a canadian dollar last month), but still not cheap...

You can't convert other currencies to American to find value of a car and decide if it is worth it, these cars have a much higher MSRP in Europe/Australia etc for taxes. So if it looks to an American like it is priced high, that is why.

Secondly, the coupes hold their value much better than the sedan, I just saw one at the dealership for 29 000 CAD, it was a 94.

Last, they made an E36 W210? W124 ftw!!!

WOW! I'm giving my 2 weeks tomorrow!!! I can buy W124s all day long for $6,000 on E-Bay and take them overseas to sell for a 500% profit! What a great idea for a business!

Right...

I've heard they're actually worth less overseas than here. Remember the 1990 300TE W124 Fifth Gear test vehicle they destroyed? It was in decent shape and they paid 950 pounds for it.

W124's Here in Australia Range from $6,000-$40,000 Here in Australia

You'd Still Pay around $15,000 for a 1990 E300 in the Low 100k's
CE's Range from $20,000-$35,000 depending the K's and Condition of the car
And the Convertibles Still Rake in, at around $35,000-$40,000

We Also Dont Get Such a Variety of W124's Australia Never had the Luxury of Getting any V8 Versions of the W124, The Only Versions that Im aware of that came out were the

320CE
300E/CE/TE
280E/CE
260E/TE
230E/TE
220E

MSRP is for new vehicles, and my point is that vehicles won't have the same value in America as they do in other parts of the world.

Congrats, your reading comprehension is equivalent to a 4 year olds. MSRP means manufacturer’s suggested retail, this is for new cars, not used. Different countries will have different factors which will affect depreciation. Look at used car prices in Canada and U.S, with equal dollars. The used Porsche Carrera 4s I was looking at in the U.S were 70g's, in Canada for similar examples they were around 90g's. New Chrysler Crossfire roadster U.S is 35 000, Canada it is 51 000. C63 in U.K will start at 51 000 pounds, in the U.S it will be 63 000USD. If you convert from pounds to get an American price, you would think the U.S would get them at $104 000. However, that is not the case. Can you see now how there could conceivably be a disparity in used car prices in other parts of the world?

Not to mention you're talking about England, Melbourne is in Australia, on the other side of the planet, so your point is worth nothing.

So no, buying American W124's and selling them in Britain is not a good idea, but I would suggest investing in some geography lessons.

If you do want to make a buck though, you can quit your job and buy american cars that are not on the Canadian RIV inadmissable list and sell them up here at inflated prices, but still cheaper than what the Canadian sellers are asking. Some people are making a killing.

You can sell cars older than 6 months old to Canadians no problems, some dealerships are selling new to Canadians. If you have a car for sale bump up the price a bit and advertise it on Canadian sites. There should be no issues with legality.

There is a dealership in Ontario that has been purchasing American vehicles and selling them in Canada, and I have quite a few friends who have bought American cars recently and have saved HUGE chunks of cash.

The 5-speed was introduced in the W124 in about 1994--in Europe, never in the USA.

The W210 is light years better than the W124.

Any newer Mercedes is better than the one it replaces.

300E a couple 1994 w124wagon E320 Wagon/,1971MGB Track/Rally, MG Midget Autocross ,2000 E320 wagon.
vili1982

Rare but they made them.
There were 4 engines that AMG used in the W210. The first was the E36, M104.995, launched in 1996 then the M119.985 in the Euro Spec E50 AMG produced only one year 1997. There was also an option for the M119.985 that was bored out to 6.0L the cars these were fitted to were designated as the E60 and came in sedan and wagon varieties. In 1998 came the M113 powered E55 which used a 5.5L v-8 SOHC 24V to produce 354 bhp and 391 ft·lb of torque.

So get the facts before you leap to a wtf, Mr.smartypants

some guy's think they know what they are talking about, others know what they are talking about.I will chalk you up to the first group

SUCH a great idea, that there are a lot of people already doing it and making a lot of money. you should go for it.

not true at all. the w210's had way more customer complaints than the w124, and don't even start on w140 versus w220. in terms of amenities and options, yes, newer is better, no arguments. in terms of overall reliability, i doubt it. a w210 more reliable than a w123? hmmm.... the last two years or so they seem to have turned the corner again, but between 94/95 and 2004/2005, reliability tanked...

What does MSRP have to do with anything? Did someone mention a 2008 E350? I must have missed that. I know where Melbourne is, thanks. You said "Europe/Australia". Is England not in Europe? Now who needs a geography lesson? BTW, Google is free. Why would I pay $$$ to learn where someplace is on the globe? If you want to disagree with me, that's fine. But don't screw with me; I don't take it well.

Why is it that as much of an insensitive a$$hole as I am, I always seem to be able to make my point without insulting someone and getting personal? What is so hard about that? Hasn't life taught you yet that it's not a good idea to insult people and insinuate that they are uneducated? People usually don't take that crap, but then it's hard to punch a monitor in the face.
