Another all highway trip today.

I filled up before and averaged about 16.7 MPG.

Filled up when I got back after a 110.4 mile trip with about 4.248 gallons.

Averaged about 25.99 MPG. Less this time because I kinda raced another 350z. haha.

i drove from victorville ca to north hills ca. used 3 odd gallons. circa 30mpg.
it is mostly downhill though.

not smart to coast with the engine off. 2 reasons;
a) you get reduced braking. no vacuum assist from the engine.
b) the transmission is not getting lubricated, but its output shaft is being turned. the transmission self lubricates in a manual. the movement of the gears splashes the oil and thats sufficient.
in an auto there's a pump that circulates oil. its engine driven. obviously, engine off, no transmission lubrication. this is one of the reasons why towing is recommended with a flat bed.

Not true. Using lower octane fuel can lead to burnt out valves and carbon deposits.

I filled up a few days ago and gave "plus" a try (89 rather than usual 91) to save some money. When you talk gas prices and say "This is ten cents a gallon less" it sound pretty good. When you see the numbers for putting in 12 gallons you save $1.20 - needless to say I felt pretty stupid and that is the last time I use 89 as gas prices are dropping around here. On the up side just before that fillup I got 22 mpg with some hard driving in there too.

yah it feels like you save so much when puttng the cheep gass but at the end if you actually do the math it comes out to be like 2 bux less lol

yeah, but thats true for someone who drives like a granny all the time. i dont drive like a granny all the time.

i've been using regular in my car for four years. i drive the car hard about once a month, take a long drive (2 hours minimum) at least once a month. whatever carbon deposits are developing are being burnt off.

My Daily Driver 1995 E300D 224,000 miles.
Currently @$3.20 per gallon here in Atlanta.
I drive back and forth across Atlanta 5 days and to get groceries etc. weekends.
26 miles one way to work. so 260 miles/week highway(some rush hour -some 80 mph)
probably 30 miles doing errands each weekend.
I go 2 weeks using 21 gal of a 23 gal tank.
Between 27 and 30 mpg depending on AC or no and good traffic or no.

With no or little stop and go Ill get 32 mpg and over 700 miles on the tank.
All that and no car payment.
I love my diesel.

Yep, socal just tipped over $3.66 I saw on the way back home for Premium.

Thats the highest I've ever seen for OC. This is what kills the cost of driving this car...

2 tanks gave me an average of 18.5mpg but I have a rough idle so it should be a bit better.

here in sweden the gas price is 12 kronor per liter which is about 7$ a gallon... and it's gonna go up more

just drove from burbank, ca to anthem, arizona, 405 miles. i had a 1/4 tank when i arrived. filled up when i got here. 13 and a fraction gallons. 31MPG

i am so stoked.

but i was driving like a grandma, really slow uphill, getting passed by the big rigs, getting as low as 40mph. averaging 60- 65 where it was flat, maybe 70 on the downhills.

my EPA sticker said 23mpg freeway when the car was originally purchased.

Whoever says using regular will hurt the engine is an idiot. No arguing. My MB mechanic who only works on w124s and w126s said it's fine to use whatever you like in it. It will not hurt the valves, or anything to that extent. Like Neanderthal said...as long as you drive a little hard every once in a while, you WILL be fine. And if a problem occurs, it's probably not because of the grade of gasoline you're using.

You guys get such good MPG.

Just filled up yesterday: 162miles / 10.4 gallons = 15.9mpg Thats with 60% freeway doing 65-70mph.

I REALLY hope my misfire causing a huge drop in mpg....

To be honest, just because that mechanic says its ok, doesn't make it right.

how you drive is the biggest factor in fuel economy. driving like a grandma is better than driving like a teenager.

where you drive, city streets, canyons, hills, will have a much greater effect on decreasing your fuel economy. long freeway drives tend to be better. but of course if you are driving like you're on the autobahn, that goes out the window.

towing and hauling decrease fuel economy.

your cars state of maintenance. obviously if you've been slack, you arent going to get as good fuel economy as if you had been more methodical.

tire pressure can make a slight difference.
wagons and coupes will generally get worse fuel economy.

I've been using nothing but "plus" (89) for the last 9 years/100K miles. Two years ago, while replacing the head gasket, replaced the valve stems seals. The valves looked absolutely normal. I don't feel any difference between the "premium" and the "plus", so why waste even $1.50 on every tank? The "regular" dies feel different, though.

I average about 18MPG city and 25-26MPG freeway and just under 80MPH.

Just got back from a 1100 mile road trip and My e320 got 25 mpg doing 80 plus the whole time through the Appalachian mountains. I use 89 octane.

It is not surprising that the W124's get good mileage cruising at 80+
I am always amazed at my 400e cruising at 80+ on Interstate 5.
I consistantly average just over 30 mpg, I use 91 as the 400E has 11:1
compresssion ratio, I have never tried 87 or 89.
Combined milage is always 20+ mpg.

just completed the return leg of the journey. 417 miles. 20.14 mpg

why the disparity.
1 it was windy was hell. seemingly the whole way here.
2 going there took 8 hours and some. i was stuck in los angeles traffic for 2 hours though. coming back took 5 1/2.
a) got a ticket for 30 over. thats gonna hurt.
b) avg 75 mph for the return leg.

another 1000 mile weekend for my car. thats about 20 weekends that ive done 1000 miles or more in my owner ship of this car. it doesnt fail to amaze me. 19 bloody years old.
