yellow points to the perch, ie an inverted metal cup in which the spring pad (orange)
rides within (you saw this yesterday).

the spring pad is rubber. the top of the spring sits in an upside-down rubber cup (the spring pad), which sits inside the metal perch. the bottom of the pad, which is between the spring and the perch, has different thicknesses depending on the spring pad number. so the thicker the pad, the higher the car sits, since the pad is on top of the spring. he's telling you to cut off most of the bottom of the spring pad, so you get a rubber barrier but no thickness, so less height.
i still think you need to remove those weird metal bits before you mess with pads, it might save you all this hassle.
