What do you guys think about ...
... a full Flat Black paint job?
Post your thoughts and opinions.
I don't think there is a W124 out there with this paint job yet?

I have never seen one of those that actually turned out well in person.
Look at that pic your sig, chris. Why would you change anything about your car??

Flat Black would be BRUTAL. Satin black would be better but still, on the older benzes it looks too try-hard new fad-ish.
Leave that to the CLS's..they are the only ones that pull it off IMO

There were a lot of flat black cars at SEMA last year, mostly in the DUB Magazine section. I think it looks really cool on some cars. Hard for me to picture because you never really see flat black cars except at shows...not a bad idea tho

I would want to see it via photo-shop before I would jump in. But it could looke nice..I think I saw a s550 with that scheme somewhere maybe at a show or something and it looked wicked.

Well I thought about the idea when I was running the idea through my head since I will end up needing a new paint job later down the line and the price quote I got for a complete Flat/Satin Black paint job is a really good deal which can't really be passed up. I also have other ideas as well which would enhance the look of the car such as wheels.
I just want something different and don't really mind trying something new which hasn't been done on our cars.
It's true that you never see a Flat Black car on the road except for shows but that times I have seen a car on the road I couldn't help but think to myself how good it looks. Especially having EVERYTHING else blacked out as well.
Hell, if it doesnt look good ... lol ... I can just live with it and save money towards painting my car capri blue or Graphite like I've always wanted to.![Big Grin](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
Theres a lot of small imperfections all over my car such as various and random mild to severe rock chips, paint cracks on the hood. Minor oxydation, scratches, swirls, dings and etc.
Mark, is the Satin Black the shinier version of flat black?

Yeah, Satin has a bit more Lustre and a slightly more smooth look to it, but still isn't as lustrous as gloss or even semi-gloss.
Go for flat or satin, I think it'd look stealth as hell.

All the HOT looking "flat black" cars are actually satin black. There is still depth to them and look clean...it's simply a satin clear instead of glossy.
I wonder if you tried it (pick a GOOD basecoat black, like 040 OEM) and if it didn't look good, could they just re-clear it with glossy?
Flat looks like horse***** as seen on that nasty W220 pic with the ugly red accents....it looks like a chalk board.

HEY! Ive totally been on my way to setting this up too. Do you still have that picture I PM'ed you? Try posting it on here, and maybe someone else will have more photos of it.
I agree with Z. Satin is the way to go. All the decent looking sating paintjobs Ive read about are actually just factory blacks, buffed with a new clearcoat-flattening agent mixture sprayed over them. So if you dont like it, you could just sand off the clear, add another coat of black and re-clear it.
If you dont mind, send me the quote the shop gave you either on here or the space. Ive been saving

The other thing to keep in mind is how difficult it is to keep flat paint clean. Everything shows up as greasey-looking blotches in the paint, such as your finger prints on the door.
The satin defintely looks better and will be lower maintenance. The few flat paint jobs I've seen look like rattle-can jobs, and the paint looked incredibly uneven.

I haven't gotten around to painting my car because it's my daily driver and i can't have it more than 3 weeks out of service....
Btw, satin black with gloss black rims looks nice. I got a paint gun at home so if anyone wants to help me maybe we can paint my car over a weekend...lmao
Ohh, on sating black the body work has to be perfect or i'll show every little imperfection..

i don't think it would look too good. that type of paint job looks good on really old cars (like rat rods) or really new cars, where it looks intentional. Our cars are in the awkward 'oldish' place where it will just look like you're just one of those other young guys that couldn't afford to finish your paint job and stopped at the primer.

Sorry, I meant to say Satin Flat Black and NOT Flat Black, I forgot there was a different between the two but I would LOVE the paintjob to turn out like that Satin Black SLR 722 in the picture mark posted.
normal Flat Black just looks like **** IMO. Satin Black it is! Um, How do they prep that paint anyways? Is it the normal base coat/flatblack mixed with the clear coat and sprayed at the same time?
I thought about wheel options and it would either be Satin/Textured Black Centers with Black Polished Lips.

Chris - You have a nice paint job already i wouldn't experiment with it. My car is a POS compared to yours. All bascoats are flat already so the clear is what give it shine. I wouldn't do a single stage paint because if you ever get wax or something that can rub it out it will turn shiny. However, your car needs to be block sanded and perfect for a sating black paint job.
Berti - Any possible hook up on those clips? Black lips look good if the center is a machine polished finish.
